Left 4 Dead 2

Oh man… I’m even more toast than I normally am.

Killing Floor is on sale on steam for $5 for today only. I figured the L4D2 players might be interesting because it’s also a zombie killing game, apparently with more gore. I haven’t played it but I heard it’s fun - I figured for that price a bunch of us could get it and try it out. It has 6 player coop. Anyway, if you’re interested in giving it a try, grab it with me.

I had a friend who played it for a while. He seemed to like it. I guess I can pick it up. At $5, even two or three hours of gaming will make it worth the cost.

This week’s mutation is versus survival. Like survival mode where you’re trying to survive as long as you can as the waves of zombies get tougher and tougher, except people can play the special infected like in versus.

I’ve been saying for a while that this game should be in the game by default. Maybe it’ll get added like versus realism. In any case, prepare to play a lot of l4d2 this week because that sounds fun.

The mode has potential but hasn’t had much work put into it. It’s kinda too tank heavy and hard on the survivors, not enough regular infected. Also seems to be glitchy - we were getting issues on some maps where the frame rates dropped dramatically.

Hopefully they might tweak and balance and patch the mode a bit and make it part of the regular mutation rotation. It has potential.

Yeah, it kind of sucked to get 10-20 FPS on some of those maps for no reason at all. I like the regular mode better but this is a fun one too.

That’s really a pity - I agree with SenorBeef in that some sort of marathon survive-against-an-onslaught-of-zombie mode sounds fantastic. It’s unfortunate that they didn’t put much effort into it.

Another vote for Killing Floor; it’s $10 now but still quite worth it. Think of it as L4D2 survivor mode meets Counter-Strike. It’s harder, twitchier, gorier and has more guns. Very fun.

Is it wrong for me to wish the L4D had kid zombies. I actually like that it has a good mix of male/female zombies but they all seem to be about the same age. Where is the horde of kindergarten zombies?

Oh, that would rock. Make them faster than the adults. Go near a school bus and they pour out of the emergency exits.

Hah, I’d pay for DLC that adds that.

I’m going to be out of town for a few weeks. Since I’m usually the one who gets the game together, other people are going to have to take over the role. It’s not hard, just start up a lobby, invite everyone, and whoever doesn’t come you hit with a stick until they do. This goes for the other steam games we play together too of course, but I figured I’d use this thread since l4d2 is most common.

We can’t use my vent server for the other games in the meantime. Bug trope about getting one, he succumbs to peer pressure.

Valve is releasing a free web comic that goes into how the original four survivors got together. You can read the comic here.

Awesome. I love that. (<3 Valve)

“Nope. Still fun.”

The mutation this week was versus survival, and they seem to have somewhat fixed it from last time - over time though it seems to get glitchy. We’ll just have to restart the game every once in a while.

Anyway, it looks like from the blog post they’re extending it for a week because they’re busy with other stuff with the free content coming out next week. It was pretty fun, we should do some more.

And of course we’ll do some pretty heavy L4Ding when the new campaign comes out next week.

Apparently when they release The Sacrifice campaign, they’re also putting the No Mercy campaign from from l4d1 into l4d2, with the original playable characters, but with L4D2’s special infected, items, etc.

Sounds awesome.

I haven’t verified this, but apparently in the DLC folder for The Sacrifice are files indicating that all of the other L4D1 maps are going to be imported into L4D2 in short order. Some intrepid modders have already done an admirable job of bringing the old maps into the game, including some radical changes to the finales (like turning the refueling of the C-130 in Dead Air into a Dead Center-esque gas can scavenger hunt.) It really did breathe new life into the old maps.

But… it’d be nice to play Dead Air and Death Toll with spitters and chargers while hearing the old gang’s dialogue. (Coach, Ro, Ellis and Nick don’t have a lot to say in the updated campaigns, for obvious reasons.)

And it’d be especially cool to have the option to switch between campaigns on the fly without having to switch games, with all of the scavange, survival and versus options thrown in to boot.

Go, Valve, Go!

I’m officially declaring TAAANNNK!!! to be the coolest mutation ever. It’s just a frantic mad dash to get to the saferoom. There’s nothing quite like getting pounded into submission by four tanks at the same time.

TMI!
It is an awfully fun mutation but Gib Fest was kind of cool too.

Help me Dopers, you’re my only hope.

I’ve just purchased L4D2 and am having issues getting set up correctly. I’m left-handed and use a trackball + keyboard or trackball + joystick. Properly set up, I used to be utterly lethal with the latter combination at UT2003, but somehow it’s just not there with L4D2. And the aiming point drifts down and there’s no support for rotation. The game seems to demand a mouse for precision - a trackball just isn’t close enough. And it expects a mouse with a scroll wheel. I don’t use mice.

Have you tried turning the mouse filter off? The scroll wheel is used to scroll through your weapons and health, but you can assign that function to any button on your trackball, mouse, or keyboard in the edit keys option.
