I’m having tons of fun with these. I like to play campaign a lot, so I was pretty bored with the original Valve maps.
Favorites:
Death Aboard - I think this is generally acknowledged to be the best. Creative, beautifully rendered, and tough. The tilted ship is an awesome idea, even if it does cause headaches and nausea. I just wish there was a bit more health on that level. Though currently, if you all die and respawn in the starting room, the room will then have health and weapons, which helps. If it’s a bug, it’s a good accident, IMHO.
Dam It - fun, single map game. The outdoor area with the damn and river are gorgeous - worth going down and exploring, even though they’re not on the linear path.
Night Terror - so much fun! I don’t want to spoil the surprises, but it has good game play and the design is a laugh riot. It must have taken a LOT of work. I still have no idea how to survive the mines, but I’ll have fun figuring it out.
Coal’d Blood - the last map doesn’t have many textures yet, but all in all it looks really good. Very much in the spirit of the Valve maps
What have you played that you like? What isn’t worth the download?
So far, Death Aboard is the only one I’ve tried. I generally only try to download maps that are fairly well along and mostly bug free whenever I grab custom content for a game.
So far, I haven’t heard of much that is mostly bug free. I’ll give some those a try when I get a chance though. And feel free to toss me an invite to campaign if you see I’m online, even if I’m not in-game.
I like Death Aboard and Dam It as well.
Both are great ideas, though both lack the polish of a typical Valve map. Has anyone heard if any of these maps should be playable in L4D2?
I would suggest trying out Dead City if you haven’t already.
A visually well designed campaign that really gives you a feeling of the difficulty of the situation. I have only played the first three maps so far, but at the end of the third map you have managed to cross the street that you could see in the first one.
The one problem that I encountered (and this was before that latest update, so perhaps it is fixed) was that the event triggers seemed to be delayed. We would activate an event and wait around while the door opened, seeing not a single zombie. Then we would turn a corned and a massive, event sized, hoard would be rushing towards us.
All L4D custom maps should be playable in L4D2 without change, or so I’ve heard. I’m enjoying the custom maps. Only thing that bugs me is that the maps tend to be too long with too many dead ends. Simplify… man!
