Left-Handed Golfers

Have any lefties ever won any of golf’s major’s? Men or women.

That should be Majors (no apostrophe).

Only one left-handed golfer has ever won a major: Bob Charles won the 1963 British Open.

Now, there are a few other left-handed men who’ve won majors- Johnny Miller, Nick Price and Curtis Strange are the most famous- but those guys learned, from an early age, to play golf right-handed. Johnny Miller does almost everything left-handed EXCEPT swing a golf club.

Among current left-handers who might win a major one day:

Phil Mickelson
Mike Weir
Greg Chalmers
Steve Flesch

And IIRC Phil Mickelson is right-handed but plays lefty.

Note, though, that Phil Mickelson is a right-hander who happens to play golf left-handed. Broke my heart when I learned that (I’m left-handed).

Arnold Palmer is left-handed. Yes he is (http://www.anythingleft-handed.co.uk/fam_sport.html). He just golfs right-handed. Ben Hogan was also left-handed. But he also golfed right-handed, if I remember correctly.

And as we speak, Mike Weir is leading the Masters by two strokes over a player who will likely fade, and five strokes over Mickelson. And he’s won two PGA events this year already.

IIRC, Phil started playing left-handed because his dad or his brother (I forget which) that taught him the game was a righty, and he just learned by mirroring what they did.

Well, that was an appropriate time to ask that question, eh?

And then there’s the guy (I forget his name, but he’s a young guy just getting started) who’s a lefty, but plays righty except he grips the club LEFT HAND LOW. Not putter, but all clubs. I think his story was that he only had right handed clubs when he started, and it just seemed more comfortable to grip it the way he does.

And as I’m sure Sam is well aware, Mr Weir has just become the first Canadian to win a Major. Poor Lefty (Phil). Third again. Can’t say I really feel sorry for him, though.

Whoops.

I meant to quote John Mace above and fill in that I used to play with a guy whe used that grip. The other guys called it a “crossover” grip. I couldn’t figure out how he did that.

Just goes to show you there’s more than one way to skin a cat.

There’s got to be more to the story on Phil being a right hander and playing golf lefty than the mirror image deal. What was a right hander doing w/ left handed clubs? It’s not like they’re all that easy to find. Anyone have a cite on that?
