Legal places to get free music?

Amazon.com has a lot of free music downloads from both new and established artists. Itunes gives away one song each week. Does anyone know of any other places to get free songs? If so, what kind of music is offered, and what’s the selection like?

http://music.download.com/ has a wide selection of styles, but no big-name artists.

If you like live music, the absolute best place I know of is archive.org’s audio archives.

Also of note is The Furthur Network if you into live music, primarily jam music, but there’s a whole of everything in there. Kind of a P2P network for tape traders.

Both sites are free, although Further requires that you install a client side interface/download manager, but I’ve never had any spyware problems as a result.

If you’re going to get into these sites, you’ll also want to be familiar with shorten, which is the format of choice for lossless compression for large files such as entire shows. It’s freeware, and really easy to use. It can be found via a google search or here.

It’s probably also worth your while to poke around etree a bit (that’s the site that hosts the shorten FAQ) - that site is kind of taper central on the net.

Radio? DishNet? Sirius? DMX?
