Revolving doors have been around for a long time-but i see them as being quite dangerous:
-if they are moving fast, you can be knocked down
-if you fall, you can be injured 9the door keeps turing)
-you can be hit by the door on entry
Given this, has anybody ever sued a door mfg. and won (for injuries)? I would think these doors would account for quite a few workplace injuries.
I think I read somewhere that most injuries occur with automatic revolving doors with faulty mechanics. I would guess that injuries are comparable to injuries in elevators and escalators.
I don’t have any answers, but I can tell you that (some) powered revolving doors have sensors that stop the door if it’s about to hit someone as well as a button to hit that slows the door down.
Also, I know people have sued becuase of automatic sliding doors closing on them.
I’ve been handling general liability claims for 20 years and I’ve never seen a claim for injuries sustained in a revolving door. However, I’m sure there have been suits against the manufacturers and the property owners. There aren’t many things in the world that haven’t been alleged to cause injuries.
I don’t think a suit alleging an un-powered revolving door is inherently dangerous could be successful and there are always regular doors right next to the revolving type so you assume any risk that might arise.
With a powered door, if it malfunctioned and caused an injury and it could be shown that the manufacturer knew of a design flaw or should have foreseen one possibly you could prevail. Also if you could show a property owner failed to inspect and maintain one in a reasonable manner a plaintiff might win.
At least some revolving doors have the panels hinged at the center so that they break away when pushed with too much force. I’ve knocked them off by entering a building too quickly.
Unless someone had brittle bone disease, I’d guess that any force that could hurt a person would knock the door apart instead.
My FIL is the head of maintenence at a hospital. He’s told me that anytime ANYTHING happens with their big revolving door, the immediately call their revolving door company and have them re-certify the door. Even if someone trips over their own feet on the way in, they’ll have the company out a half hour later checking it.
