I’m trying to find out the legalities in writing about people I’ve known, like former co-workers, family etc.
My searches don’t turn up answers to that specific question.
Does anyone have info?
Can someone sue you for things you’ve said in a memoir-type work?
People can sue you for anything they choose. The question is whether they can win damages.
It depends on a lot of factors: what you say (is it libelous?), if the people are recognizable, if they are “public figures,” etc.
If you stick to facts, you have a strong defense (“Mary was twice arrested for prostitution,” as opposed to “Mary was a real slut”). Once you start moving to opinions, then you’re on shakier ground.
BTW, if you sell the book, make sure the indemnification clause does not require you to pay anything unless there is a court judgment sustained on appeal. Some publishers will settle out of court and bill you, even if the case is baseless.
