It speeds it up just enough for me to stay sane. Barely. Is there an option to speed it up further?
I’ve got component cable going to a plasma set and I get a bit of artifacting, or visual static/noise during cut scenes. Most noticible in the clouds when link freefalls towards a hole.
Hmm, yeah, that was my first thought, you know, typical Wii artifacting. But it’s so…regular, in contrast to artifacting, which tends to be more splotchy. I’ll try to take a picture of it when I get home today.
Okay, so here’s that strange pattern I’m talking about:
Weird.
Looks like an interlacing issue. Do you have progressive scan turned on-try turning it on if not? Are you using the component cables too?
Yeah, looks like interlacing, right? I’m using component cables and both the Wii settings and my TV agree that the signal is 480p. It doesn’t happen with ANY other Wii game. I even tried plugging the cables directly into the TV instead of my receiver, and tried going back to the standard AV cable too. No improvement.
I’m at a total loss.
Yeah, that’s weird, because I haven’t noticed those issues at all. Maybe try turning off progressive scan just to see if that somehow resolves it? I don’t know what else to recommend–that’s very weird.
Anyone else having trouble controlling link while he is sliding? I’m on Eldin Volcano and there is a part where you can either go left to get a goddess cube or right to get a piece of the key. I managed to get to the left once, but then didn’t make it to the platform with the goddess cube. Ever since (I’ve tried dozens of times, literally), every time I hike back up the mountain and slide down, I can’t get link to the left. I think it’s forcing me to the right!? I’m using the analog control stick; it seems to work the rest of the time while sliding, but just not in this area.
Anyone win a heart piece at ‘Fun Fun Island’? Did it piss you off? Because It’s taking me forever!
He promises fun, but offers only pain. I got the heart piece, but I took out my anger on him by vainly slashing at him for a good 3 minutes afterwards.
Not sure, I never had issues, my only guess is maybe you have to tilt the remote.
ETA:
Also, (spoilers, though they don’t mention it directly in game, it could spoil a twist):
I find it really cool that the Ballad of the Goddess is Zelda’s lullaby backwards. Musically that’s almost impossible though, I can’t tell if they somehow planned that they’d do something with the lullaby backwards way back when they made OOT or if an incredibly difficult thing to do with music just happened by accident.
The game was designed for a nun chuck and a motion plus controller. The additions make for more options.
Well, I read through this thread a while ago, but am now ~20 hrs into the game and I have to say that this is the best game I’ve played in a while.
I’m off work for 6 weeks recovering from jaw surgery, so I bought this to pass the time along with a 3DS w/Ocarina of Time (just so I’d have something that I know I enjoy, just in case)
This is the only game I’ve played on the Wii that made the motion controls feel like a plus and not a liability. I love swinging the control like an actual sword and it’s about fucking time.
Now all they need to do is make some Star Wars games like the Kyle Katarn ones with this control scheme and they’ll be even more golden.
Even more intuitive is the shield. I just love throwing up my left forearm to block.
I just finished collecting all the tadpoles in the flooded woods, man this game backtracks a lot. Am I almost finished with the game? How do you collect the last shield, do you pay for it, or acquire it?
The backtracking isn’t too bad, they change the area or add a new one for more or less every significant backtrack.
Anyway, the last shield is with the Thunder Dragon, after you rescue him, talk to him a few times. He’ll tell you to go away and come back later, just keep pestering him. Then he’ll offer you a boss rush, defeat 4 bosses in a row and then quit to get a Piece of Heart. Defeat 8 bosses in a row and then quit to get the Hylian Shield.
I recommend doing the Thunder Dragon last, however, because there’s a game breaking bug that can occur if you do him too early, causing the other Dragon events to not trigger properly.

Oh man, I DON’T want to do this, (beat every boss again)! I’m guess I’m going to have the game paused for about a few weeks before I get the energy to try to attempt to do this. I know some of the bosses will be easier with the sword all powered up, but I just don’t want to go through that crap… especially that squid. I don’t like this one bit.
I knew about the glitch BTW… weird Nintendo didn’t catch it.
I only just got component cables earlier this week (only just got an HDTV the prior week) and I’m noticing the same thing on my Wii. Not just this game, but all Wii and GC games seem to have it to one degree or another. Seems to particularly affect transparencies and gives me flashbacks to the days of fake transparancies used in game systems of long ago.
Honestly, on this 40" 1080p TV, I see very little difference when the Wii is set to 480p as opposed to 480i, though oddly enough Gamecube games do seem to have some improvement (at least the ones that support progressive scan). Still exhibits the same issue we’ve been discussing, though.
I highly doubt there’s anything going on with the cable, as it’s a multi system cable from monoprice and on PS3 and 360 it looks fine, even at 1080p. Almost as good as HDMI.
I can’t get past the last Ghirahim battle… he keeps flipping me around when I get him near the edge of the platform. I try to jump backwards or to the side, but the bastard attacks me. Any tips? I know there’s more to come after that, (he *then *fights with a sword, *then *turns into a sword and *then *you fight the last boss.) AND it’s really a pain in the ass to fight all the enemies he sends your way before you reach him at the bottom… not that it’s hard, but it’s that I have to do it over and over.
This game is really not worthy of score of 90% or more. There are way too many times where I’ve put down the controller and ignored playing for a while. Now I’m just trying to finish the damn game. I got everything in the game, (aside from upgrading all my weapons), I just can’t finish it. I wont be playing “Hero Mode”.
The sword really does play fine, but I just suck at sword fighting.
I love Zelda, but those who say it’s the best Zelda ever are full of it. I would like to see Retro work on the next Zelda;
Zelda Collaboration with Retro Studios is Possible.
I doubt it will happen though. ![]()
You don’t knock him off the edge, you stab him, this breaks the jewel on his chest. After you do it (maybe multiple times, can’t remember), he falls on the ground and you have to do a fatal strike, this causes the platform to break.
Also, this is my favorite Zelda, I can’t explain it, but I really like the way it is. Other combat just feels like a step backwards now, except maybe Dark Souls, but even that would be better with Skyward Sword elements. The only real complaint I have about it is feignting, since it’s counter-intuitive. I also LIKE revisiting the areas, I feel they vary them enough each time that it’s not just a retread, besides, OOT had you basically do the same thing. Okay, okay, the first time you revisit Faron Woods was a bit of a cop out.
Also, a collaboration with Retro is definitely possible, they already did it with Capcom several times.
I just finished this game and was very satisfied with it.
Things I liked:
Controls - fights were no longer a timing issues (hit button X NOW!), but involved actual strategy and execution
Characters - people felt real (especially Zelda). Even normally blank Link seemed to have real growth throughout the game
Artistic style - I don’t care about framerate and high-end graphics. I like games that are visually interesting. I played Wind Waker a month ago and the graphics still hold up today because of the personality and style. Skyward Sword isn’t the best Zelda artistically, but it was enjoyable.
Puzzles - some of the dungeons seemed average (for Zelda) but a lot of them were very creative. I heart time-shift stones.
Flow between areas and temples
Things that were OK:
Boss fights - some were clever Demise with the Groosenator, the whole sequence of final boss fightsbut most felt familiar
Upgrades - most reviews talked about how it allows personalization (along with medals), I didn’t think it did enough. I would have liked choosing a healing potion that either improves stamina OR lessens damage OR regens OR a lesser mixing of all 4. There is a big room for improvement with this system.
Things that were bad:
Text speed (though it is the perfect speed for reading out loud to my son who was watching me play)
Relatively sparse population - after playing Okami, most Zelda games feel empty. Zelda still has better combat and puzzles though.
Flying overworld - flying is OK, but not as enjoyable as it could be. I was much too bored during it. If it was going to be there, add more islands, more challenges, more people. The beetle is a much better flying experience.
