I read a post on the avclub review that pretty much shared my feelings. Instead of summarizing it, I’ll just quote it.

I’m 100% on Team David. I didn’t like the choice of the assault angle, but I’m choosing to believe that everyone else is deluded more than likely by the Shadow King.

How do you let a mass murderer walk around after all SK has done? You don’t, unless that villain is controlling your perception. Regardless of how you feel about David and the “future prophecy”, he has always tried to be the good guy, while Farouk has never seen humanity as anything more than insects and playthings. That’s a huge difference from the get-go. Sorry Alex, I’m just not seeing it your way.

The Jon Hamm narration this week even points to the manipulation at hand. David even with his flaws and split personas, is the one sane man amongst the other crazies. It’s not their fault, but they’ve succumbed to the delusion. I’m convinced that Farouk deceived and deluded Syd both in the future and the present and all David did was make her forget the deception, brought her back before that took place, not force her to act against her will.

The mouse incepting her yet again before the trial, is another clue as much as a misdirection that she’s being freed from David’s affect. We are talking about the desperate act of the Shadow King trying to save his own skin and masterplan. Until I see more evidence next season, this makes much more sense than turning our star of the show into some well meaning assaulter.
