When you get money out of the ATM, remember to retrieve your card. :smack:
I feel yer pain, bra. Just got my replacement card for the one I abandoned last week. Which had just been sent as a replacement for my old card. Not the first time I’ve done it, either.
That’s why the “insert card and remove quickly” machines are so wonderful–the card never leaves your hand. Also, the “remove card to receive cash” machines–you don’t get your money until you take your card back.
My best friend works at a bank, right next to the guts of the walk-up ATM outside. Luckily, she has a microphone, and can yell at people who forget their cards.
I’ve never forgotten my card (knock on wood), but I did once walk away from $100 I forgot to take out of the tray. sigh
I’ve done that, too! Scared the hell out me, because it was one of those check cards that doubles as a Visa, and I don’t know if you need the PIN when you use it as a credit card.
I learned that if you don’t retrieve the card from the ATM in a timely fashion, it gobbles the card back up, instead of just leaving it there in the slot for the next person to pick up.
When I called the bank to tell them what I’d done, they said they’d send me a replacement. I told them just to send me a regular ATM card, without any Visa logo, since I obviously could not be trusted to carry one of those around!
Yeah, I went back and waited for the bank to open. They opened up the ATM, and it wasn’t there.
But I then ran to my bank, cancelled the card, and checked the account. No one had made any transactions, so I’m in the clear.
Whew. Man am I a dumbass.
My parents live in South Africa and I’ve noticed this there… the ATMs all give cash before card.
They are essentially the same as the ones here in Britain (some made by IBM, some by NCR etc) except that every single machine I have ever used here, makes you take the card before the cash.
I assume this is because leaving the cash results in a one-time loss, but leaving the card could mean much more.
Why the difference?
Anyone work for the IT department of a bank?
