First of all, just about nobody is arguing in favor of “uncontrolled” immigration. Significant numbers of people are arguing in favor of allowing more, in some cases much more, immigration; which is not the same thing.
Second, if we’re talking about actual positions about allowing significantly more immigration: I’ve seen the argument that it’s not in the country’s* best interest disagreed with; usually with cited evidence about benefits as against costs. Do you think it’s only being accepted as “a valid reason” by people who agree with it, or do you mean you’re claiming that it’s not accepted as a valid subject of debate? Because I don’t think I’ve seen the second; at least, unless such cites are ignored instead of themselves being reasonably debated.
*Are we talking about the USA here? but the subject’s applicable to multiple countries, though the details of arguments and the statistics will vary.
I really did not intend to turn this into another immigration debate. We’ve been over the subject enough, what with Brexit and US’s perennial boarder problems.
Seriously, it must be taking time from your lifelong mission of mining the dregs of the right-wing internet searching for “smoking gun” evidence that there is a trans person somewhere that is unhappy.
You fucking scumbag. It should be clear to anyone with the ability to read (meaning probably not you) that I was responding sarcastically to iiandyiii’s comment about the bombing today (that it just shows how good Biden’s decision was).
Stuff like this - outright lies to assassinate the character of a member of the SDMB you don’t like - is despicable and you should be ashamed of yourself. Go to hell.
Oh come off it. Come down from your high dudgeon. Everyone can see you’re relishing in the fact that this is potentially a source of political vulnerability for Biden. You don’t give a damn about any of the people killed or harmed by these attacks.
You do know that’s the main use of the Pit? It’s a means for the rabidly partisan board majority to disingenuously portray those they disagree with. They can’t do it with logical debate they do it with volume of mud.
I applaud your spunk, Sam (seriously). You’re much put upon on this board, so even though I disagree with you on almost everything – and you sometimes really piss me off – I’m going to stand up for a fellow Canuck, wingnut though he may be. You are that strangest of birds: a rather extreme conservative, and yet an exceptionally articulate one (I’m referring here to some of your lengthy and detailed arguments). Makes for interesting conversation sometimes.
But what’s with the ‘extreme conservative’? Let me remind you again of my positions:
I am a strong supporter of LGBT rights, including trans rights. I’m very tolerant of differences between people - that’s my libertarian streak. Let your freak flag fly - so long as you aren’t coercing others.
I believe the right level of taxes is maybe slightly lower than where they are now. Imam okay with a progressive tax code, so ling as the bulk of the nation’s capital stays out of thenhands of government and with the people who earned it.
I believe in a social safety net. I do not believe in a permanent unearned income for people who can work. I believe many on the left ignore or downplay incentive effects of welfare policy, but theynare real and damaging.
I believe we need a significant number of regulations to maintain a healthy civil society, but that we are currently over-regulated. Business startup should be much easier than it is.
I believe in free speech, free association, etc. Bills C-10 and C-36 are immoral, connterproductive, and dangerous.
My family complies with mask mandates, and we all have two shots. Because we’re not stupid.
These positions would put me to the left of Reagan, and also to the left of 90’s Bill Clinton, who opposed gay marriage.
What I am is a defender of Capitalism. That puts me in company with pretty much everyone except the extreme left wing of the Democratic party and the left wing of the Liberals/NDP. My main beefs are with central planning, nationalization/control of industry, speech codes and laws, and an increasingly powerful federal government living WAY beyond its means and seemingly not caring. I am opposed to public unions, which puts me in such extreme right company as Dwight Eisenhower.
So if I’m now ‘extreme right’, that suggests to me that it’s the left that has gone way farther to the left in recent years. If anything, I have moved leftwards over the years.
