“La Resistance (Medley)” from South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut.
Kyle and Stan in unison, towards the end, “When did this song turn into a f***ing marathon?”
I’m not sure if this qualifies, but it’s the first thing I thought of when I thought about breaking the 4th wall.
On Live, Baby, Live* there’s a live (duh) verision of “Need You Tonight.”
Normally, the song goes:
Hutchence: How do you feel?
Backing Vocals: I’m loney.
Hutchence: Whadaya think?
Backing Vocals: Can’t think at all.
Hutchence: Whatcha gonna do?
Backing Vocals: Gonna live my life . . .
In this version, in the last refrain, Hutchence sings, “How do you feel?”, and instead of the rest of the band singing the next line, he holds out the mic and the crowd roars, “I’m lonely!”
He replies, “Not tonight.”
So hey!
Won’t you play
Another Sombody-Done-Somebody-Wrong-Song?
One that immediately springs to mind is Elton John’s This Song Has No Title:
This one probably doesn’t quite fit the criteria, but the title of Pink Floyd’s Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict does describe the “song” quite accurately.
I just cheated and did a search in my WinAmp library for songs with the word ‘song’ in them. There are a lot of them! But most of them don’t mention themselves in the lyrics, so they’re not too interesting. Here are the top three artists:
Everclear has three, all on Songs From An American Movie:
[ul]
[li]Song From An American Movie (two parts to this one, but that’s getting carried away)[/li][li]The Honeymoon Song[/li][li]Annabella’s Song [/li][/ul]
Queens Of The Stone Age have four, all on Songs For The Deaf:
[ul]
[li]A Song For The Dead[/li][li]Another Love Song[/li][li]A Song For The Deaf[/li][li]Mosquito Song[/li][/ul]
Led Zeppelin have five, spread across various albums:
[ul]
[li]The Lemon Song[/li][li]Immigrant Song[/li][li]The Song Remains The Same[/li][li]Rain Song[/li][li]The Wanton Song[/li][/ul]
Incidentally, these are the only artists in my collection who had albums with Song(s) in the title (Led Zep have a live album called The Song Remains The Same).
Just thought of another one: Ben Folds (who, by the way, did Song For The Dumped and Hospital Song when he was with the Five) sung this in Rockin’ The Suburbs:
And I think that’s enough time wasted with this post.
