Let's build a Straight Dope Christmas Spotify list

Link to it is in the original post. Here it is again.

Now at 4 hours long.

Let It Be Christmas - Alan Jackson
Christmas Is A-Comin - Bing Crosby
Christmas in Killarney - Bing Crosby

Honorable Mentions:

The Angels Cried - Alan Jackson
Mele Kalikimaka - Bing Crosby
A’ Soalin’ - Peter, Paul & Mary

We’re listening now as we make our cake (I’m “helping”).… Mrs Snowman kicked the playlist off in shuffle mode, but I insisted that we listen in order so I can track who picked what.

Enjoying it a lot. There’s a surprising amount of stuff I haven’t heard before, plus a lot of old favourites. I’m enjoying the wild shifts in style. Thanks @Saint_Cad for pulling this together.

Oh, and that song from Love Actually has an unexpectedly killer guitar solo.

This is great! And quite a tonal shift to Bjork straight after.

Dammit, I want more songs on this playlist. More, I tell you!

A couple of novelty Christmas songs:

“Monster’s Holiday” - Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett and the Crypt Kickers
“Twelve Days of Chriatmas” - Bob and Doug Mackenzie

Already there
Why no Anne Murray?

Carol of the Bells - Tabernacle Choir (and many others)
Hey, Santa Claus: The Moonglows

Not only is “A Christmas Gift for You From Phill Spector” the best Christmas album ever, it’s one of the best albums ever, period! From it I’ll take “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” by the Crystals and “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love.

Then I’ll take “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings” by Barenaked Ladies w/Sarah McLachlan.

Christmas Day by Squeeze - many Uk references in there
Christmas Is Going To The Dogs by Eels - Mrs MiM’s fave
Christmas In Capetown by Randy Newman

Honorable mentions
Thanks For Christmas by The Three Wise Men (actually XTC - not on UK spotify)
Frosty the Snowman by Fiona Apple - a standard?
Christmas Song - Jethro Tull
I’m Not Dreaming of A White Christmas - Gilbert O Sulivan
It’s Gonna Be A Cold Cold Christmas by Dana - my actual favourite christmas song

Nadolig Llawen to all dopers!

MiM

All updated. Darlene Love’s song was already on the list and as a reminder, no traditional carols. I figured we hear hundreds of different versions of those this time of year in other places.

Has anyone else copied a song they found on this list to their personal Christmas list? I did that with Come Darkness, Come Light.

The Roches: Star of Wonder

Maddy Prior & The Carnival Band: Poor Little Jesus

Roger Wagner Chorale with Salli Terri: Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head

The last two are lesser-known folk tunes but not exactly what most folks think of as traditional carols.

I was thinking just today I should have included this as one of my three, so thank you for that.

I was going to suggest “Christmas Time for the Jews” from SNL, but I don’t know if that’s available as an audio track.

It is. I’ll put it on there.

Oh and I took Stan Freberg’s “Green Christmas” off the list since it’s a bit and not really a song.

Disagree. I suppose you wouldn’t want to replace it with Tom Lehrer’s Christmas Carol?

I think that is already on the list. If not I’ll add it.

OK, time to open the playlist again for 2023. If you have previously contributed, you get 3 more. I have added my 3
Looking at the Lights - Jinkx Monsoon & Ben Delacreme
Christmas Time for the Jews - Darlene Love
Rio - Duran Duran

Quick reminder of the rules
You can pick at most 3 songs to add. “Christmas” is interpreted as any Winter Holiday song (so Xmas, Hannukah, Yule, etc.) or any wintery themed song.

Songs does not include traditional carols. We hear those all of the time and there are so many versions the playlist will have 15 versions of Jingle Bells.

No Christmas Shoes.

Songs must be available on Spotify (to add to the list).

You can talk about other Christmas songs you like but they won’t go in the playlist. They are honorable mentions.

Ok, of course had to look back what I posted last year. Here are three more:

Mistress For Christmas - AC/DC

Christmas - The Who

Must Be Santa - Bob Dylan

(you must see the video to this one, it’s hilarious)

ETA: Oops, just saw that “Must Be Santa” is already in, so I nominate:

X-Mas In February - Lou Reed
