Ok, here’s one. I normally find “Jingle Bells” as tedious as all of us, but the version by Michael Bublé and the Puppini Sisters is so jazzed up and swings so hard that I really like to listen to it and have it on my private Christmas playlist (as the only traditional carol).
One of my favorites in the traditional carol song set is “The Holly and the Ivy” by Magpie Lane, which may not be the same tune many are familiar with. It’s quite catchy, as folktunes go.
My 3 picks for 2023:
New Found Glory - Somber Christmas - almost picked this last year but no room, so here it finally is
Beth // James - Santa Won’t You Deliver (My Baby This Winter)
Celine Cairo - Christmas Lights
Steeleye Span does it with that melody.
I don’t have Spotify, but I want to play and looked these up to make sure they are on Spotify.
DJ Play A Christmas Song - Cher
Christmas Murder Ballad - Emma Caiman (a novelty? But is is also a very pretty song)
Deli’s Gone - Johnny Cash (the song is based on a real Christmas Eve murder)
The Elf’s Lament - Bare Naked Ladies
Christmas Is. - Lou Rawls
Rock & Roll Christmas - George Thorogood
Step Into Christmas - Elton John
Updated and although I consider it a song it think others might consider it a carol
Little Drummer Boy by Justin Bieber & Busta Rhymes
Over 7 hours now
Mr. Garrison - Merry Fucking Christmas
The Dan Band - I Want to Rock You Hard this Christmas
and for some reason I’ve always been fond of the Beef Wellington remix of Bing Crosby’s version of “Happy Holiday.”
Wow 100+ posts and no mention of in IMHO the only tolerable Christmas Music album, https://youtu.be/_fh133ZO1AE?si=hKjmGTEQkU3WDyLz
A Charlie Brown Christmas
(I searched the thread and didn’t find it, so I’m hoping these are ‘new.’)
Jeremy Lister - Wouldn’t Be Christmas Without You. Brand new this year, and I’m completely obsessed with it.
That’s off a short Christmas album here in 2023, and he’s got a couple other recent sets of original Christmas songs, too. “Happy Holidays, Everyone” is wonderfully catchy and inclusive. “Christmas In Rio” is a romantic change-of-pace.
Any appetite for another round of entires this year? It’s entirely up to you…
I’m old so the playlist opens the day after Thanksgiving and while y’all are waiting, stay off my lawn.
Rule change this year. Each list can contain at most one (1) traditional Christmas Carol. But Christmas Shoes is still disallowed.
I don’t mind waiting. I just happened to think of it and, since I’m also old, I wanted to ask before I forgot it again.
This thread calls for Death Metal from Christopher Lee’s band.
How about Jingle Hell
Like I said, opening thread for suggestions on the Day after Thanksgiving so hold onto it.
It is 12:06am MST on the day after Thanksgiving. A reminder of the rules:
You can pick at most 3 songs to add. “Christmas” is interpreted as any Winter Holiday song (so Xmas, Hannukah, Yule, etc.) or any wintery themed song.
This year you may have at most 1 traditional Carol in your list. We have plenty of songs so we can broaden our depth a little but I am still trying to avoid a lit with 60 versions of Jingle Bells
No Christmas Shoes.
Songs must be available on Spotify (to add to the list).
You can talk about other Christmas songs you like but they won’t go in the playlist. They are honorable mentions. Let’s get the egg nog flowing and add to the list.
I’ve started with Kissing in the Cold by JP Saxe and Julia Michaels. Still deciding on what carol I want.
I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday - Wizzard
Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade
Christmas Eve Eve (no, that’s not a typo) - Paul and Storm
Honestly, how we’ve gotten this far without the first two being added is a mystery to me.
Honorable Mentions:
The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole
Counting Down - Eamon
Let Me Melt - Jenny Stardust (the flip side of the Frosty story, featuring the line “You only made me to watch me die”)
And with those additions, we are over 7 1/2 hours of holiday music.
That sounds like a depressing song. Pair it with Klaus Nomi’s The Cold Song.
Xmas In February - Lou Reed (also depressing, it’s about Vietnam)
Run Rudolph Run - Chuck Berry
The Power Of Love - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
