And, in an attempt to address the topic, I do wonder if we’ve got more strident idealogues these days, or if I’ve just gotten less patient with them.
I’ve come up with a strategy: on any topic that might touch on politics, I’ll jump in for the first two pages. Until the *'s start trotting out their usual straw men.
Then I’ll check back when it gets to page 4 or 5, and skim past the “Did Too!” and “Did Not!” posts, to see if there are some actual interactions with the OP’s OP.

More than likely the quality of the board and the posters is similar to how it ever was and I am the one that has changed, older and more cynical, I don’t know … but time was that I was impressed by many posters here and had thought that they’d be interesting people to meet in real life. They seemed smart, clever, quick-witted, knowledgable, curious, and mostly debated honestly … sometimes with snark but snark that was funny and not very often with meanness. Not saying there are not some like that still … if there weren’t I’d entertain myself in other ways … maybe should … but it sure seems like there are more and more people just being jerky to be jerky and trying hard to misrepresent and twist rather than to understand what each other are saying. People I’d work hard to avoid having to be around in real life or deal with only because I have to. And I find myself having less patience with the idiots who insist on stinking up the place just because they can. Which is not a good sign.
Probably just the life cycle of a poster though rather than anything objectively true about the MB. Maybe I just didn’t notice it so much before. Dunno.

Could be. Probably is. Because on the one hand my first thought is that that post illustrates what I am experiencing. No humor to the snark. No cleverness. No wit. Nothing more than jerkiness for its own sake. From someone whose main contribution to this board is political stridency, if you call that a contribution. More and more posts are like that … its more and more like walking where the self-entitled walk their dogs, having pay more attention to avoid stepping in shit and less around that makes the effort worth it. But OTOH it is not like I was ever the one bringing much in the way of wit here. So who I am to complain?

We had a lot of numbskulls on the board when I started posting. As the years went by (cue sentimental violin music) they became less bothersome. I found myself in more enjoyable discussions, occasionally learned something useful and found my online bile level dropping.
Could be that this happened because I was spending much less time in GD and not getting into extended battles about politics and free speech (cue Motörhead’s “Born To Raise Hell”).
I prefer to think it’s because you’ve all gotten so much more wonderful. :smack:

I think that people here are just generally angrier than they were 15 years ago.

Somebody who has more time and patience than I do should make a representative list of pit threads about this place going downhill. There’d be at least two for every year I’ve been here. Peaking at when pay-to-post came about.
