If you could bring back a comic strip from the past, which one would it be, and which comic would you dump to make room for it?
IN: Steve Canyon.
OUT: B.C.
If you could bring back a comic strip from the past, which one would it be, and which comic would you dump to make room for it?
IN: Steve Canyon.
OUT: B.C.
2 in:
Bloom County (pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease, gods of comicdom!)
Calvin & Hobbes (ditto…I miss my pint-size and plush philosophers)
2 out:
Cathy (yes, it’s occasionally funny, but it’s old (ACK! Please…give me a PHBBBBTT over an ACK anytime.)
B.C. (agreement, Czar. Jonny Hart gets preachy more frequently every year.)
OUT: The Family Circus.
Why do I think we’ll get a lot of Calvin and Hobbs?
Ok, Calvin and Hobbs
and The Far Side
Out: Cathy. Not so much that it’s not funny. Just that it’s PURE EVIL.
And to make room for The Far Side: Marmeduke? Family Circle?
Dennis the Menace? Whatever.
IN: CALVIN AND HOBBES
OUT: Frank and Ernest
Damn you betenoir!!!
You beat me by seconds!
NNOOOOO!!
::sobs::
Yes, but you spelled “Hobbes” correctly.
Hmm. Deja vu.
IN: Calvin & Hobbes or The Far Side. Either one will suffice to bring a moment of happiness into my life. I know that others have chimed in with these strips, but I’m chiming in with my personal picks, and if they are duplicated, well then, tough.
OUT: Garfield. The strip has been dead for years, they just haven’t buried it yet.
Well, even though I don’t think Watterson is coming back anytime soon, Calvin & Hobbes would be my choice for the one in. It was just such a wonderful, imaginative comic.
Out…well, of those in carried by my local newspaper I’d have to go with…any of them. I’d specify a couple imparticular that are getting extremely repetitive, but I know they’ve still got loads of fans.
On a side note, would it be so difficult for my local newspaper to print the colour comics in colour?!? Yep, today I turned to the comics and saw a bunch of great, big…gray comics. What’s the point of having the special section when the majority of the comics are unfunny as it is?
Well, there you go. Typing that “e” would have taken crucial seconds off my time.
Yup,
Calvin & Hobbes/ Far Side in
I’d say for out:
Andy Capp (never have understood this one)
Ziggy (ditto)
Winsor McCay rules!!!
Now that I’ve got that out of my system, here’s a thought for making Family Circus, which is currently the worst comic strip in the world, actually amusing.
Have Bill Keane continue to submit the strips as he currently does. Then remove the dialogue. Each day, the wordless strip will be run and creative readers will submit proposed punchlines for it. A panel of judges will choose the funniest line and rerun the strip a week later with its new punchline.
Those of you who saw the Dysfunctional Family Circus website know that this works really well. My guess is that as long as the checks roll in, Keane will have no problem with this. It’s pretty obvious he has no shame now.
In : Calvin & Hobbes
Out : Rex Morgan M.D.
(I avoid it by location, that’s how much I hate it.)
In: Far Side
Out: Family Circus
In: Bloom County
Out: Cathy
in: Little Iodine
out: Crabby Road
In: Pogo
(Hey, if Little Nemo can nominate the really old stuff, then so can I.)
[sub]Oh, I was eatin’ some chop suey with a lady from Saint Louie…[/sub]
Out: Garfield. On second thought, toss it out, renew it at the last minute, then take back the renewal and give Jim Davis a huge raspberry for coasting that long on no-content crap and merchandising revenue. I feel dirty just being in the same thread with this crap.
There is, of course, only one strip that cries for a return (but only if they rerun the original strips), the greatest of them all:
Krazy Kat
I’d also be happy to see the real Pogo back.
To drop? Any “dramatic” strip out there. If we want that sort of thing, bring back Captain Easy, or even Mickey Mouse.
In: Ernie Bushmiller’s “Nancy”
Out: “Garfield”
IN: Calvin & Hobbes (of course)
OUT: Blondie, Beetle Bailey, Dennis the Menace (hey, C & H is worth at least 3)
IN: Far Side
Out: Nancy, Garfield (Far Side, while I love it and miss it, is worth slightly less in comic terms to C & H)
Well I hate to follow the crowd but I too would LOVE to see Watterson bring back Calvin and Hobbes.
As for what was to go? Well, where would you start? There are a number of Australian ones I don’t bother to read at all. And a number of the already-mentioned would be worthy of spontaneous combustion.
But you know what? I’m to excited thinking about C&H (even as a mere dream) to care…
In: Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend
In: Barnaby (by Crockett Johnson…as good as Calvin and Hobbes)
In: Calvin and Hobbes
In: The first 4 or 5 years of Peanuts strips that Shultz’s estate doesn’t like to see reprinted)
In: The first half-dozen years of Blondie, when she was Blondie Boopadoop, Flapper at Large.
In: Thimble Theater (“Whadddaya thinks I yam? A Cowboy ‘r sumthin’?” …more-or-less Popeye’s first words!)
Out: Marmaduke
Out: Heathcliff
Out: Any Blondie after the first half dozen years
Out: The Born Loser
Fenris
