To go back to the analogy I made initially concerning the classic Trekkie skit on SNL, I feel like William Shatner when he yells in utter frustration “It’s just a television show, people!” and one of the Trekkies says “Are you saying we should be paying more attention to the Star Trek movies?”
Now I realize that my OP was kind of long, and that reading it all may have tired the lips of the less literate among you.
So here is a short summary: All this began when I was accused of lack of objectivity because I do not live up to SDMB’s allegedly high ideals of pure, unadulterated exchanges of objective information. If I persist, I stand to lose the respect of my fellow savants.
I came onto the BBQ pit to say that that is pure, unadulterated bullshit.
I am a cybernerd loser and I make no pretence to be other than a bundle of prejudices and preconceived notions with nothing better to do than spend $14 paying other people to post my opinions because normal people with lives will not listen to my rantings.
I invite other dopers to try a similar dose of REAL objective self-examination.

Valteron, there are fora where you are more than welcome to express your opinion, unsupported by any facts whatsoever.
No one here is claiming exclusive rights to 100% objectivity. But there are real facts in the world. I’m typing on a keyboard; that is a fact. It is possible, even probable, that someone else is in possession of facts that you are not. We have two fora which are intended for the most part to be exchanges of factual information; they are “General Questions” and “Great Debates.” If you are called upon to support your opinions by facts in these fora, and cannot, you will lose respect on the board. For most of us, that’s a disincentive, because we are honest enough to believe that, by and large, we are representing our real selves in our posts, that others are doing the same, and that we would prefer to be respected by those others.
You may be indifferent to the respect of the other posters. That’s fine; it would appear that they are pretty indifferent to your opinion as well. That’s because, on this board, you actually have to have shown some value to earn more than utter indifference from the other posters. That value will differ from forum to forum and from poster to poster, but there are several near universals. One is that you display a real sense of humor. Another is that you keep the self-pity to a minimum. And the third and most important is that you recognize the difference between that which you are expressing as an opinion and that which is either factual or at the very least, supported by evidence other than that manufactured in your own mind. Der Trihs demonstrated that he does, by referring to himself as the resident frothing-at-the-mouth atheist. He is, and it’s delightful to discover that he knows it. I think he also knows that by coming across that way, he has lost a lot of respect from other posters, and apparently to him it’s worth it. It may be to you as well. But you don’t then see Der Trihs in the Pit then trying to convince all the rest of us that we’re idiots because we care about respect or that we’re addicts because we spend time on the SDMB.
So pick your direction and stick to it. Either put up or shut up. You can have respect, or you can choose to rant and lose it. But if you choose the latter, don’t then go bitching at the rest of us for being idiots because we didn’t. All that does is to show sour grapes. This is how it is here. Take it or leave it, because you haven’t yet earned enough respect or affection for much of anyone here to yet care.

This is such an odd thread. Such an odd OP. Why would anyone flaunt his pain and past addictions as a way of castigating others for (his) perceived addictive behavior?
I need Excal to clean up that sentence (reason 1032 for my being here), but seriously…unless OP is acting out (in which case I shall effect my egress quickly) or he is well, what exactly? He seems to be saying, “hey, I’m a loser, but not as big a loser as all you guys” and using the very means that he denigrates in which to do so.

Oh, you think I was just messing with you. Actually, I’m serious. The rules of English grammar specify only one question mark or exclamation point per sentence. You apparently feel that’s not enough to allow you to express yourself adequately. I was just wondering why. Yes, I know lots of people do the multiple-punctuation thing in E-mail and on message boards. I’ve asked this question before but no one has ever answered me, so I thought I’ try again.
