Bush gets it, I think. The current laws stink, as I already said (with cites to lawyerly types who also say the law sucks). Bush has said the immigration laws needed examination and an overhauling. He supported reform, and was agreeeable to a compromise.
However, the compromise bill was killed. Republicans are blaming Democrats for killing it - I think they said Dems were playing procedural games for political benefit. Democrats are blaming Republicans - I believe Dems objected to amendments to the bill calling for criminalization. Me, I blame the so-called conservatives, with their fucked up mindset. I’m not saying that we should suddenly and without warning start gunning down people willy nilly, but if we make know that our borders, except for designated entry and exit points, will be closed as of X date, publicize that fact widely on both sides of our borders, announce that we would be patrolling said borders with our armed forces and that anyone attempting to cross the closed border would be subject to deadly force if they did not immediatly surrender when challenged, how is that fucked up? I just don’t get it. Do we as a nation have the right to defend our borders, or don’t we?
We’re not a nation of homicidal maniacs. It violates some kind of law/treaty. It would villify us, justifiably, in the eyes of most of the rest of the world. Finding enough people to kill children, women, and men crossing the border might be a tad difficult. The many decent people in the USBP wouldn’t remain Agents if they’re job description suddenly included killing unarmed children, women, and men. Etc.

The issue here is context Weirddave, when the OP is calling attention to a guy that is claiming for the eradication of a kind of people and using the Nazis as an example (and I also did notice on NPR one of the Minutemen leaders use “final solution” regarding this same issue referring to the border wall) it is hard to say you are clean after diving in to defend solutions that require killing others.
Unless they use violence shooting at them is never the right solution, the “ugly” fact is that illegals are human beings, their crime does not deserve what you propose, having said all that, I’m on record complaining that the enforcement and security of our borders is a joke, but the bigger joke is in the government’s actions, where you have mostly the Republicans telling us that an underfunded, undermanned show of force will be good enough to solve this, while at the same time telling us to be happy for even more tax cuts for the really well to do that every day show less willingness to do the right thing and help in this time of need.
Then again, another solution the Minutemen and right wing blogsters are offering right now is to demand the impeachment of GW Bush.

I don’t think Ludovic put it very well (certainly not the way I would have), but I have a feeling that he(?) was referring to incidents like the S S St Louis. The Nazis were, in fact, unspeakably vile; but if the rest of the world hadn’t played along, they wouldn’t have had nearly as many victims.
