Anyone catch this revived show with Wayne Brady? I’ve been trying to watch it while I exercise on the treadmill and have a few points/questions.
Can you tell they add the moans, groans, and laughs? I mean, you can see people behind Wayne Brady not reacting at all when you hear the sound effects. I guess because he is in the crowd, I notice it more.
Where do they get all the costumed people? I used to wonder this on the original with Monty Hall. I get how they do it now the show has been in production for awhile, but how did they get costumed people for the first episode?
Does anyone else detect a slight lack of interest from Wayne Brady? When I saw he was the host, I thought, “Oh, yeah, he’s a great people person. He’ll be great.” I think, and I may be wrong, he’s just not that into it.
Honestly, I actually kind of like the show, but it does seem to be a good step down from the Price is Right, especially back when that was hosted by an interested Bob Barker(as opposed to those last years he slept through).
The costumes in the original run of the show were actually not part of the show’s concept when it began. Apparently, people started showing up in costume so they’d attract Monty Hall’s attention and he’d pick them for one of the games. Eventually, everyone was coming in a costume, kind of an arms race of sorts.
Can’t speak for the new version. I’ve seen it a handful of times and consider it pretty bland. Without Monty Hall and Carol Merrill, the show has nothing.
I watched a while back. Maybe it was because it wasn’t shot in HD or the set but something about it seemed… Low-budget and public access-y. And dated, even for daytime game shows. Meh, I never go out of my way to watch it, but it’s occasionally on in the background.
I watched some of this recently when I was house sitting. If you’ve never seen the Monty Hall version it would make a huge difference. This just doesn’t compare and I agree that Brady will burn out before too much longer if the show just doesn’t die all together.
I kind of agreed with you when Wayne first started LMAD - now he’s in high gear and the show is a daily mini-version of his Vegas improv show, with audience members participating in the gags, etc. The “deal” part has been pushed back and the show is now firing on all 8 IMO - there’s never been a “game” show like this one. It just took a little time for Wayne’s writing team to put his personality into the show. His sidekick Jonathan Magnam(sp) has worked with Wayne for years
PS - it’s extremely easy to get people in an audience, costumes or not. The first tapings were no doubt advertised locally - people who live near those productions are always on the lookout. The audience of game shows is notoriously filled with future up-and-coming celebs and others who need a way to get some face time on tape and can do it for free by being a game show contestant. Hollywood (and NYC) game show productions are a ritual for thousands of entertainment industry hopefuls. 10 yrs from now you’ll see clips of your next favorite hunk/hottie on their LMAD appearance.
I was ON it… in the back rows where they put people without costumes or inappropriate costumes (zombie baby- not good for mid-day television? who knew?) A lot of my friends (we went as a group- they pay groups to come) were actually on it and won prizes. (Christmas episode this season. My friend Greg was a candy cane my friend Amy was a human dreidel- the episode was filmed in October)
They set-up crowd reaction shots to put in for big clap-worthy prizes and “OHHHHHS!” They did seems to try to get things ‘real’ a lot of the time. I’ve actually never watched it on tv so I don’t know what they do sound-wise afterward.
Back in the monty hall days wasn’t it originally just straight and then one couple showed up in costume and got on TV and then slowly it became the show’s gimmick?
Now most people come in costume but they actually have a costume shop that you can go through during the looonnnggg waiting process (you get there at like 8 am and the show doesnt tape until like 2 or 3pm). You can buy costumes and props there… yes… you buy them.
Oh he couldn’t care less about this. He clearly hates it. The moment the camera stops taping he marches straight back stage . There is no spark at all in his eyes unless he’s doing a character.
The show people (producers, warm up guy, PAs ,etc) also treat him like an animal that can strike at any moment. You’re warned “Don’t do X in front of Wayne he hates it.” Or “If Wayne comes up to you let him make the first move”
…For example we were warned not to chew gum. “If you have gum in your mouth Wayne will just walk away from you.”
Other things to note- You don’t get to keep the cash if you win the “cash games.” Immediately after the camera goes off you a PA runs up and takes the cash. You get issued a check after the show
