Let's pit the google ads...

Fuckity fuckenstein fuckmeister fucking fuck!

I think the ads for mass mailing lists are in poor taste but with any luck that will improve. I don’t really care about the ads as long as they stay on the bottom of the page an unobtrustive (matching the board’s color scheme does that nicely).

If only …
The new email address idea seems a good one. My email address in my profile is exclusively used on SD so I’ll also look out for spam on it.

So a paid subscription is to cover the cost of the board. And we now have ads on every page to pay for the board. I wonder if the dues will ever be dropped.
Excuse me while I laugh myself into a stroke. Fuck this is dumb.

I would like someone to please tell me where my money is going. Just let me know, and that’ll be cool. Is someone trying to make this into a full-time gig, so we gotta pay their salary? What?

I know we’re paying a good rate compared with other MBs, and I’m thankful for that. But other MBs are seeing something for the money they pay.

What in god’s name has been done with my money?

Get Adblock, right click on the ad, and select ‘adblock iframe.’ You’ll have to do this more than once.

The boards are currently VERY slow for me. Coincidence? :dubious:

Personally, I don’t give a rat’s ass if the admins get pissed or not. For one thing, they’re not going to start telling me what I can or can’t block. And for another, they can’t tell anyway.

So, fuck you, Chicago Reader. Adblock rules, and you’re not getting a single fucking click from me.

Hey, good luck getting a straight answer for that.

I have no idea if this is an accurate estimate, but it’s always annoyed me that the subscription price is $14.95 (or $7.95, or whatever.95). I’d gladly pay the extra five cents because the .95 thing is insulting to a group of people who are bound together by a desire to fight ignorance.

So far the Google ads I’ve seen have almost all been for mailing lists. What the fuck is the point of this? Totally wrong audience. The PTB here need to inform Google that we’re a bunch of highly intelligent people who are interested in issues and culture and mortally opposed to spam and scams. If we’re going to be subjected to the ads, at least make them something that there’s a chance in hell we might click on.

Download the Adblock extension, Guin, and then you can block the ads.

Ok the ad that says “Monetize your website sign ons and log ins” makes me want to stab someone. MONETIZE?

I’ve started a thread in ATMB with a link to AdBlock.

I’m so glad that I paid $7 to have ads shoved at me. Thanks a lot.

God bless the Adblock guys.

You won’t have to do this more than once if you delete beyond ‘pageads2.syndication.google.com/’ or whatever it is. Adblock: https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=10.

Thanks, kimera. I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong.

No problem! Catsix posted even better instructions here

I think they should add some midis and animated GIF’s. Then the transformation to the look-and-feel of a Geocities site would be complete.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll take a look at it.

I think the only time I ever click on ads would be the ones at SAAN, like for Silver Jewelry Club.

Here? Not so much.

It seems to me that the “AdSense” thingummy is only looking at the cell that the ads appear in, instead of the entire page.

Personally, a line of context-sensitive text ads doesn’t bother me, if it’s going to help the SDMB remain a paying proposition – and I’m a guy who hates obtrusive advertising with, uh, the fire of ten thousand suns.

I’d rather they were at the top of the page, though, between the Straight Dope banner and the thread title.

Once the content-sensing thingummy is working, it might actually be kind of a good thing. The first thing I did was load up the “pan-fried semen” thread, to see what AdSense made of that. Clearly, it ain’t looking.

More practically, I don’t mind if Cafe threads, for example, have links to relevant products somewhere unobtrusive on the page. If it worked, and the current Hitchhiker’s thread had unobtrusive links to the BBC Shop’s CDs of the radio series, Disney’s DVD, and Towels R Us — that would be fine. People are directed to things they might be interested in, the Reader has a way of making a few extra pennies from lurkers and guests (and members,) and everything’s tickity-boo.

I wonder what kind of ads we’ll see in some of the oddball threads, or GD, for that matter. Probably some pretty schizo guesses.

Of course, folks who have zero tolerance for advertising can skip 'em, and since they weren’t going to be the source of click-throughs anyway, nobody loses. I have my browser set up to block all pop-ups and content from banner servers. If the text ads ever start to chap my ass, I know I can avoid 'em. (You don’t even need a browser extension – Windows users can just edit the “hosts” file to resolve *.syndication.google.com to the localhost, I think. No biggee.)

Having ads on the message board part of this site is
FUCKING STUPID!!!

Hey, Admins! Turn them OFF !!!

And a big FUCK YOU for subjecting us to this SHIT.

That’s what I like about you, NCB.

You’re subtle.
