It seems to me that the “AdSense” thingummy is only looking at the cell that the ads appear in, instead of the entire page.
Personally, a line of context-sensitive text ads doesn’t bother me, if it’s going to help the SDMB remain a paying proposition – and I’m a guy who hates obtrusive advertising with, uh, the fire of ten thousand suns.
I’d rather they were at the top of the page, though, between the Straight Dope banner and the thread title.
Once the content-sensing thingummy is working, it might actually be kind of a good thing. The first thing I did was load up the “pan-fried semen” thread, to see what AdSense made of that. Clearly, it ain’t looking.
More practically, I don’t mind if Cafe threads, for example, have links to relevant products somewhere unobtrusive on the page. If it worked, and the current Hitchhiker’s thread had unobtrusive links to the BBC Shop’s CDs of the radio series, Disney’s DVD, and Towels R Us — that would be fine. People are directed to things they might be interested in, the Reader has a way of making a few extra pennies from lurkers and guests (and members,) and everything’s tickity-boo.
I wonder what kind of ads we’ll see in some of the oddball threads, or GD, for that matter. Probably some pretty schizo guesses.
Of course, folks who have zero tolerance for advertising can skip 'em, and since they weren’t going to be the source of click-throughs anyway, nobody loses. I have my browser set up to block all pop-ups and content from banner servers. If the text ads ever start to chap my ass, I know I can avoid 'em. (You don’t even need a browser extension – Windows users can just edit the “hosts” file to resolve *.syndication.google.com to the localhost, I think. No biggee.)
