Let's Play Music Artist vs Music Artist!

So the idea of this thread has been partly inspired by the threads on Bangles and the GoGos, and the comparing and contrasting it has elicited.

The rules are simple, each poster will pick two music artists and ask which artist is preferred by next poster.

The following Doper will give their idea, short reason to why they prefer one over the other. Then that person comes up with their OWN two music artists and on and on it will continue.

So hypothetically I pose "Lady Gaga vs. Beyoncé?, you would choose and give a reason as to your choice.

Then you would choose your own and someone else takes over.
Blondie or B-52s?

Ooh, a hard one right off the bat. New York vs Athens. Hmmmm…

Blondie is one of my ringtones, but the B-52s are all over my playlists. B-52s for the win.

Neil Young vs Bruce Springsteen?

Tough one, but I liked Springsteen from the first, and hated Young (my college roommate played his first album incessantly – I’ve grown to like him more over the years.

The big one:

Beatles vs. Elvis

The Beatles changed the face of music. Elvis died on the can. Beatles win.

Yes vs. Genesis

Yes! I listened to it all through college. Genesis is fine, but Yes is part of my life.

Rolling Stones or Grateful Dead?

Rolling Stones, no contest. Just by coincidence, I’m listening to their* Hot Rocks* right now.

A battle of my second- and third-favorites: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers vs. Eminem

Jesus, is this any contest? Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, naturally.

Now: Metallica vs. Slayer.

Go.

Metallica had some talent on display, whereas the worst Judas Priest song is still better than the best Slayer song.

Next up: Stevie Wonder vs Marvin Gaye - no one said they had to be easy.

Well, that’s not hard. Slayer! Metallica’s bad guitar sounds and douchebaggery just don’t hold up to Slayer’s cavalcade of awesome guitar sounds and complete lack of sucking.

Let’s go with mainstream industrial. Minisitry or Nine Inch Nails?

ETA: Dangit, ninja’d. I guess pick which one you’d prefer. And there’s possibly no better metal song than “South of Heaven”

Marvin Gaye digs deeper - he’s Billie Holiday to Stevie’s Ella. Marvin.

And because I straightened up the thread ;), I will play with a twist:

Early Beatles (I Want to Hold Your Hand; She Loves You) vs. **Later Beatles **(A Day in the Life; back half of Abbey Road songcycle; etc.)?

Not playing this round since I don’t listen to any Beatles, early or late, but you so stole my idea - with Beatles replaced by Pink Floyd. :stuck_out_tongue: (End hijack.)

Anyway, WordMan’s question still stands:

I’d tackle that one, except I prefer the MID-period Beatles (c. Rubber Soul & Revolver).

I agree with John DiFool, but will say Late Beatles.

The Byrds or the Beach Boys?

The Beach Boys. Sorry, Byrds, but the Boys beat you for both game-changing art and dumb fun.
Aerosmith or Cheap Trick?

Cheap trick. They seem to be having more fun. And Tyler never could sing.

Electric Light Orchestra vs. Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Okay I’ll do the Ministry vs. Nine Inch Nails that no one did and the ELO vs. TSO.

Nine Inch Nails win it for me, I am more familiar with them since I am younger, and I like plenty of their songs from their first album onwards. I’m just not that knowledgeable in regards to Ministry.
I enjoy some ELO songs, mainly “Strange Magic” but the band is not my cup of tea. Heard them being referred to as the Beatles of 70’s and the like by people here on this thread. Good band though.

I choose Trans Siberian Orchestra, love their Christmas tunes. So TSO for the win.

Okay next round:
Elton John vs. David Bowie?

Elton John…his music is a bit more accessible to me. I have two or three of his greatest hits albums.

Kesha vs Dr. Dre

Straight outta Compton - Dre in a walk. I can’t name a single thing Kesha has done, and I am no fan of music these days. But I know Dre.

Jethro Tull vs Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd, but it’s a tough call.

R.E.M. vs. Queen

I like the guys in Queen a lot more than the guys in REM (all of whom seem like major league a-holes), but REM had more good songs, so they win.
Eric Clapton vs. Jeff Beck
