Let's recommend podcasts to each other

As Dopers are a web savvy bunch I probably don’t need to explain what a podcast is, but I will just in case. Podcasts can simply be thought of as audio blog that you download and play on your Ipod (although they can go on any mp3 player). There are literally tens of thousands of them available, and they’re all free (from what I know). There are political talk shows, comedy, music, sound effects and everything in between. There’s probably a guy that recorded his cat walking on piano keys for half an hour! Itunes makes it easy, because the latest “episode” automatically syncs with your device.

Anyhoo, here’s what I’m listening to at the moment. (these can all be found on itunes)

The Rampage podcast – Pretty good leftwing political talkshow.

Alternative hip-hop lounge – Currently my fav. Underground non formulaic hip-hop featuring different artists. Excellently produced music, great sound quality.

Endgadget podcast – Good tech talkshow about all the latest gadgets

Groovetek – Supposed to be drum and bass but more boring techno sounding. Must delete when I remember

Rate my rap – Another hip-hop one. As the name suggests you can go to the site and vote. Naturally, some tracks are good, some are awful

Uglycast – Essentially a rotating cast of characters jamming in a basement, creating all type of music from funk, metal, and everything in between. I haven’t heard anything super great, but I like the idea, so I’ll give them a few more chances to impress me.

I can provide urls should anyone need them, I’m too lazy to look them up right now. I’ll also let you know when the subtech podcast comes online.

So, what are you all listening to?

I’ve got some NPR podcasts that are interesting: John Ciardi’s words, Brian Unger, and Michael Feldman from Whad’ya Know. I’ve also got some Lileks stuff that I need to put on my iPod; I can’t wait until he starts using RSS so I can just subscribe to it on my own. I think I’ve got one more, but I can’t remember what it is and I don’t have my iPod here.

That said, I’m taking a class next semester about podcasting and Internet broadcasting, and I’m really looking forward to it.

The Paul Harris Show - “Talk radio for people who never thought they’d listen to talk radio.” Never know who’s going to turn up, I have one podcast in my library where he interviewed Bruce Campbell around the time The Man with the Screaming Brain premiered.

Coverville: great collections of cover tunes around speciic themes… check it out…

Hehe, cool I got some subscribing to do!

I like the Roadhouse: the finest blues you’ve never heard. A weekly show (very professional) of upbeat and uptempo blues numbers, usually by newer artists. Very nice listening.

I listen to podcasts on the bus and while working out. I download about 15 hours a week, which is kind of scary, I guess. Listing everything I subscribe to would be a little tedious, so I’ll give a rest to the NPR/PRI-drum I usually beat in podcast threads, and list some of my other favorites:

Are We Alone: The SETI Institute’s 'cast, notable in the breadth of fascinating topics it touches upon. They’ll tackle anything even tangentially related to SETI: astronomy, biology, computing, evolution, space exploration, skeptical issues, etc. The host, Seth Shostak, is a really groan-worthy punster, too.

In Our Time: From BBC Radio 4,an in-depth discussion by an expert panel on a topic of academic topic. They’ve done some great history-of-science stuff, like on magnetism, and a show on current asteroid research, plus they do literature, famous people, philosophy, etc. What I like about it is that they don’t just do a bland survey of the subject. They dig beneath the surface and get into the nitty-gritty. It’s also very stuffy and British. I think the accents alone work some kind of sub-harmonic resonanace on your brain and make you smarter.

43 Folders: From the productivity blog of the same name. Tips and tricks for being more focused, productive, and (dare I say?) happy. I think I’m falling in love with Merlin Mann. His sense of humor really comes out in the podcasts, even more so than on the website.

Ancestor: To balance out all this high-minded crap, Ancestor is a trashy serialized horror/thriller novel. Not as good, IMHO, as Sigler’s first podcast novel, Earthcore, which is still available, and well worth a listen.

I downloaded and enjoyed a few of the doper recommendations from here.

I love film critic Elvis Mitchell’s The Treatment*, which is a half-hour interview program he’s done for years for KCRW, a public radio station in Santa Monica. He usually gets really interesting guests and he’s the most prepared interviewer I’ve ever heard, but he’s not obnoxious about it – he just asks questions about the subject’s work and ongoing themese that make clear he’s surveyed the guy’s whole ouevre.

Get it here.

Man, why do the podcast threads drop like a rock?

It’s the 21st Century, people! Get with the program!!!

I recommend Sheldon – he hangs out at the Greyhound station and he’ll readily pay your boy $75 for . . .

Oh. Sorry. Thought this thread was about pederasts. Carry on.
