Following a thread in GQ and another in MPSIMS, it’s clear that the source of confusion in a lot of really ignorant people is that the name New Mexico just sounds too foreign, too unAmerican. A large enough percentage of people think that it is not a US state that the problem is clearly the name itself. So let’s do our Santa Fean, Albuquerquian, and Las Crucian brothers and sisters a favor and let them back into the Union. They’ve earned it. Besides, we need their tax pesos.
Because someone’s gotta say it:
There’s a new Mexico?!
Ya know, in 100 years, when the US has been divided up, young students will be looking at their textbooks about New Amsterdam, and saying, “Why’d they change it? I can’t say.”
