Following a thread in GQ and another in MPSIMS, it’s clear that the source of confusion in a lot of really ignorant people is that the name New Mexico just sounds too foreign, too unAmerican. A large enough percentage of people think that it is not a US state that the problem is clearly the name itself. So let’s do our Santa Fean, Albuquerquian, and Las Crucian brothers and sisters a favor and let them back into the Union. They’ve earned it. Besides, we need their tax pesos.

I know, you’re wondering, how would a Spanish name make it sound less foreign? But nobody has any trouble with Colorado, Nevada, Montana, or Florida.
Agreed, but as part of the deal Massachusetts will be followed with a colon.
My suggestion for New Mexico’s new name? Canada. But then we’ll have to rename Canada. We could call it Mexico. That should eliminate any confusion.
