I never thought that I would know many people who share my birthday. One of my closest friends shares it and another friend’s son was born on May 1st (which ironically she named him the same first name as my husband!). Small world. But I guess with only 365 days in a year, someone is bound to share your birthday!

Oh yes, I lurve pink!! People at work ask me if I’m feeling okay on the days I don’t wear pink. Yeah, yeah, I can be very girly.

Statistically it supposedly works out that in any group of 30 people, 2 will have the same birthdate. The first place I heard this was Let’s Make A Deal, perhaps not the most reliable of sources. Later I heard from a more reliable source. I never took statistics so I wouldn’t understand the math but intuitively this doesn’t seem right to me. Your odds for any specific birthday are only 1 in 365/366. Why does the probability drop down to 1 in 1 when 30 people are present? Each birthday is a random event. Shouldn’t then the probability be 1 in 365 times 2 times 30? That doesn’t equal 1 in my book.

Can any explain to me why this is so?

We have had 206 respondents for 160 days. That may not equal 1 in 365 but it is not far off from it either.

You’re a little bit off on your statistic. There’s a 50% chance that among 23 people, two of them will have the same birthday. It’s calculated by figuring the odds of NOT having the same birthday as everyone else.
i.e. 1 person in a room there is 365/365 percent (100%) chance that person 1 will not match anyone elses birthday.
Person 2 walks in the room and has (365/365) * (364/365) percent (99.7%) chance that they don’t match anyone else’s birthday
Person 3 walks in the room and has a (365/365) * (364/365) * (363/365) percent (99.2%) that they don’t match anyones birthday.
Keep going like this, and you’ll reach roughly 50% after the 23rd person.
