Let's see how many states/countries/provinces we have people here from.

Under “Oceania” (you could say “Pacific Islands” perhaps, might be more accurate, but Australia is a continent of its own) – could you not only italisise “Australia” but also “New Zealand”, please? As has been said, NZ = seperate country, indy nation, yada yada plus we have very sharp beaks with which t’ defend our national honour. Thank you.

I wouldn’t take cruise operators as the golden rule. What about Caribbean cruises that stop at Bermuda, over a thousand miles away from that sea?

[quopte]Pushkin is in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland, home of irishgirl, is a separate nation. The term “British Isles” covers the English, Scots, Welsh, and residents of the island of Ireland, as well as the Isle of Man’s Lobsang.
[/quote]

This, however, is a good point well made  And you’re right that ‘British Isles’ is probably the best way to group these entries, rather than ‘various islands’. (I’m still sulking that we all get lumped in as ‘England’, and I’m being associated with sundry northerners, but there you go.)

From Southern California. Still here.

(Final point, though - it’s not really incorrect to put both Dublin & Belfast under the ‘Ireland’ category, as they are both indisputably located on that island.)

Case Sensitive- Sorry. I didn’t know Orcland was NZ.
And DataZak, I’m sorry…I must have been sniffing glue last night. :smack:
BluePitbull, what part would it be considered then? Central America? South? None at all and just an Island? Or should I make “West Indies” it’s own independant category?
Ice Wolf, I would, but is NZ divided up into sections like states or provinces or such? I do hold it as a separate country on the list, just like I do Sweden and Netherlands in Europe, but Italicisize (is that a word? Ha) Germany. shrug

Here Idle Thoughts, just copy and paste this Oceania (removing the term 'Oceania, as it helps with the formatting to have NZ completely separate) into yours. I’ve fixed up a couple things:

Australia
Australian Capital Territory - caiata
Western Australia - csharpmajor
New South Wales - coop, Cunctator, TheLoadedDog
Queensland - Atheist Princess, Silentgoldfish
Victoria - Caught@work, C3, robinc308

Pacific
New Zealand - calm kiwi, Ice Wolf, jastu

This makes NZ separate but non-italicised, just as with the smaller European countries that don’t have states (unless the Kiwis want to give their regions or whatever you call them, Otago and whatnot)

Howzit, neighbor

Oregon.

Sorry to continue nitpicking…but hey, this is the SDMB!

You’ve got a few options to organise this, and these are the two I’d suggest, with the first being my preference as a combination of political and geographic boundaries:

Option 1

British Isles
England - grimpixie, Angua, Mangetout, Small Clanger, GorillaMan, MrAlpen
Ireland - irishgirl (RoI), Pushkin (NI)
Scotland - GCU Stout Heart
Wales - rayh
Isle of Man - Lobsang

Option 2

United Kingdom

England - grimpixie, Angua, Mangetout, Small Clanger, GorillaMan, MrAlpen
Northern Ireland - Pushkin
Scotland - GCU Stout Heart
Wales - rayh

Outlying islands
Isle of Man - Lobsang

Ireland

I like TheLoadedDog’s suggestion, Idle Thoughts. Your way had New Zealand still looking like we are part of Australia. We are not. Like Australia, we are a sovereign nation.

GorillaMan, I’d go with Option 1, because AFAIK the Isle of Man is not part of the United Kngdon. Like the Channel Islands, it is a Crown Dependency, bit it “belongs to” (owes fealty to?) the Queen through a different route than the UK does.

waves Hi! Another New Yorker! Although I’m from Upstate.
I also know **taxii78cab ** and **Exgineer ** are both NYers. **taxi78cab ** is out of town this week, so she can’t respond. Not sure where **Exgineer ** is.

Minnesota here.

I know that! (That’s why I, err, raised that point earlier in the thread! ) ‘Outlying islands’ was my attempt at a way to accomodate the IoM in a way which will also future-proof someone from the Channel Islands popping their head up - except that I’ve now checked, and it appears they’re “historically” regarded as part of the British Isles (never knew that). So yeah, Option 1 it is!

Trabuco Canyon, Orange County, California

I’m from New Zealand.

(And is it just me, or are all us KiwiDopers jafa-flavoured? Makes a sort of sense, i guess, but I’m sure I’ve come across someone living in the South Island.)

um, on these boards, that is.

**Banquet Bear ** is from Wellington. **Mbossa ** is from Napier.
