Let's talk beds

I have a love/hate relationship with beds. I find it extremely difficult to find one that works well for me. But for now, I have a weird question that I haven’t seen answered in google searches:

Does the height of a bed affect your quality of sleep? I found one search result that said if you have trouble climbing or hopping into a tall bed, or if you have trouble bending down into a low bed, you should buy something of a more appropriate height for you. I currently have a very tall bed that I have to hop up into. I don’t have trouble with that except for a little awkwardness. But when I’m lying there it also feels… I don’t know… strange to be up so high? I can’t tell if the height alone is affecting my sleep quality because I have trouble with the mattress and the pillows for sure. I’m going to fix those (an ongoing, expensive expedition to find good sleep), but for now what I’m asking you guys here is about the height of the bed. Is it possible that sleeping up high is a problem?

Other than getting in or out, I can’t see how it would be.

Do people sleeping on the upper floors of an apartment building, sleep worse than those on the lower floors?

I don’t think that’s a fair analogy. The frame of reference is exactly the same for both parties involved.

The magic trick for me was switching from box sprig bed to platform bed. I sleep like a baby now.

It might be obvious but I’m trying to figure out if I need to buy a whole new bed or just a new mattress. The only problem with the bed frame is that it’s high. Mattresses seem much deeper than they used to be, so by the time you add a mattress and box spring to it, it’s very high. I’m 5’5" and almost need a step stool to get into it.

With a platform bed, you can get rid of the box springs altogether. My GF is 5’6", and she has no problems getting in and out of my bed. And I’ve got one of those thick mattresses (firm mattress with pillow top).

The height of a really good bed should be no more than an inch above or below the bottom of your butt-cheek when standing naked with your back next to your bed.
Easy in, easy out… no running jumps. Its just You being comfortable in a bed that feels made to fit You.
OK, now if your partner has different leg lengths than you, you’re Fucked.
But lets not go there for now…

Why not try just putting the box spring and mattress directly on the floor?

It’s entirely possible that the height isn’t a problem and I just feel like it might be because nearly everything else about the bed is. Likely I just need a different mattress.

When you are sleeping are you aware of your frame of reference? I’m not. So, physically, the only difference would be the miniscule differences in altitude levels, while sleeping.

If JcWoman, is subconsciously aware of the frame of reference, then it’s a psychological issue, not a physical one.

We got a foam mattress with the same bed frame, and it was higher due to being thicker. No problem, but I’m tall and so is my wife. Our dog is the only one who seems to mind, and that is more because she is getting old. (And we have a ramp for her if needed.)
I bet the problem is with the mattress, not the height. Our new one was worth every penny.

Just get a low profile box spring. When we got our new bed (bed frame, box spring, mattress) the total height was ridiculous. We had to jump up to get into bed. We had the furniture company swap out the standard box spring for a low-profile box spring and all was right with the world.

I got a new mattress and was bummed because I really was not sleeping well on it.

After about a month I figured out that the rudimentary metal frame had come un-done when they were setting up the new mattress and my bed had a very slight tilt because the box spring was sitting on the under-the-bed storage and not the frame in one corner.

I got things straightened out and now it’s all good.

As for height…I’ve never felt like it was an issue. I’ve slept in hotel beds and guestroom beds of varying height and the height never crossed my mind.

I’m aware of my distance from the top of my bed to the floor. Which would be the exact same distance if I were in an upstairs apartment or a downstairs apartment. I’m also aware of where the edges of my bed are. How else would I keep from rolling of the bed?I’m also somewhat aware of where the critters are, as I tend not to roll over on them too.

Well if the OP is like you, and the height of the bed is causing her to have an uncomfortable sleep, then it is a psychological issue, not anything wrong with the bed.

I ordered a bed frame online and a friend put it together for me. It has slats and the mattress sits right on them. Why is a box spring necessary or even desirable?

On top of my mattress I have a memory foam pad and a featherbed on top of that. My very deep fitted sheet fits over all three, but I use sheet straps to hold it in place.

Okay so here’s the next bed question. DH revealed that he’s not married to the high four-poster (the bed in question), so I can replace the entire bed as long as I don’t spend a king’s ransom on it. My question is, will a bedding company take the old bed frame for any kind of trade-in value? Do I have to get rid of it myself by listing it on eBay, Craigslist or giving it to Goodwill or whatever?

It could be related to the fear of falling, if one rolled out of the bed.

If I were to sleep in an upper bunk bed, I’d be nervous and afraid of falling, and that could affect the quality of my sleep.

“I can’t tell if the height alone is affecting my sleep quality because I have trouble with the mattress and the pillows for sure.”

Have you tried a memory-foam cover for your mattress? It takes a while to bed* in but its really comfortable.

*this was entirely intentional

Oh yeah, mattress toppers galore. Part of my frustration is that my husband didn’t let me buy the pillow top mattress that I wanted because it cost too much… but then we ended up having to spend another $1000 on a deluxe mattress topper anyway. And I still have trouble with it! False economy and lesson learned. This time I’m picking the mattress I want!

You spent a thousand bucks on a mattress topper?
