Well, another George did a great job disproving this idea.
I have no idea.
They absolutely did if they wanted FDA approval.
Race and ethnicity data is required to be collected for FDA approval. No one would run a real clinical trial without members of all major races and ethnicities. There are quite a few known drugs that have differing effects in different races.
A few examples. CYP2D6 is an enzyme involved in the metabolism of a number of different classes of drugs. It is expressed in different amounts in whites and Asians, and should be taken into consideration in any study.
Blacks respond more poorly than whites to a number of beta blockers .
Any topically applied dermatologic would obviously have to be vetted in people of different skin color as responses have been noted to be different.
This is all vital data.
In other words, Jack O’Connell wasn’t saying that these teachers were culturally insensitive, he said that they might be.
In the rest of the article, other possibilities were suggested: violence and PTSD were included. Not everything was being covered at the summit.
I had to roll my eyes when I saw that the actor (Edward James Almos) who portrayed the real-life successful teacher in the film Stand and Deliver was to address the summit. The article did not mention that the actual teacher resigned because he did not get the support that he needed from administrators.
Yes, in my opinion eventually groups will not be compared by race because “race” will be seen as mythical. Even when I was still teaching in the 1980s, some of us balked at reports that required us to report our students racial identities. Some of our white students were darker than our black students and “race” was an unknown. That was before we knew what geneticists were going to say about DNA and race.
Sarafeena, do you use “leftist” to refer only to socialists?
No, he was saying that the teachers may be culturally insensitive in a particular way. In the previous paragraph, he said (supposedly) that he believes cultural insensitity IS the cause of the achievement gap. Not MAY BE, but IS.
Different people offered different thoughts. So what?
The way people are today, I doubt it. There’s a lot of racism in the United States, as well as a lot of people who like to complain about racism even when it doesn’t exist. But you never know.
Specific kids, of course: I don’t lose my job if aggregate kids fail. However, if I try to approach the specific kids who are failing by denying that there might be any commonalities among them that are contributing to their failure (or that there are commonalities among the succeeding kids that are contributing to their success), I will have to reinvent the wheel with each kid. I also won’t be able to use any professional research to help me figure out what to do.
I’m not going to treat a brilliant black child as if she’s failing in school. That would, of course, be both stupid and racist. But if there are things going on with the black kids in my class that might prevent them from succeeding in school (for example, if half of them are cousin to the teenager who was murdered over the weekend), it’s helpful for me to know these things.

My ex was a teacher and she was instructed while doing her Degree that "Blackboard "was no longer an acceptable term to use.
Sorry I didn’t see this question until just now. Generally, when I say “leftist,” I am at least describing people with socialist leanings. There are a lot of gray areas when it comes to political philosophies, so I can’t say that I necessarily 100% equate the terms “leftist” and “socialist,” but generally speaking, I would say yes to your question. Why that matters in the context of this discussion, I’m not sure.
