This evening, I was at my favorite oriental store picking out a new package of noodles to try (they’re the ramen noodle type however, their selection is MIND BLOWING… like 200 types…It’s my goal to try all of them. So far, my favorite is spicy-lime chicken)
Anyhow, I’m a cook so I check out the spices as well and today I noticed something odd. Two types of poppy seeds. As a baker as well, I make bagels at times so I get the black “Papaver somniferum” type. I believe they’re more commonly known as the opium poppy. correct me if I’m wrong but I think they’re more commonly known as the opium poppy.
Next to those, they had White poppy seeds. I’m not speaking of a grayish tinge, either… these were WHITE poppy seeds, also marked white poppy seeds on the label.
Okay so whats the dope on these? Are these of the Papaver somniferum nature as well (or the opium poppy?) They were a but they were more expensive… So, who can help me out and fill me in? No help on wikipedia!
Probably.
Papaver somniferum, aka the opium poppy in addition to a raft of exotic nicknames, has a variety album which produces white seed.
