I figure this question will get answer in 1 post, but does anyone know what the A on the left, front shoulder of some hockey jerseys stand for? I know that the C stands for captain, but I cannot figure out the A.
As you might have guessed I am kinda new to hockey, but damn it ROCKS!

I really do hate to pick nits, but I’d hate for you guys to go around with the wrong information. The ‘A’ stands for alternate and not assistant. This link will take you to the aplicable rule in the NHL rule book… http://www.afn.org/~afn56636/rules/rulebook/rulefram.htm
I stand corrected. Thank you, Adam.

Just a bit of follow-up. The captains and alternates are the only ones allowed to discuss rule disagreements and other controversies with the referree.
A team is allowed one C and two As, but may elect for three As and no C should the C be injured (this happens occasionally).
