I’m looking at DVD recorder/VCR comination units and I see LG brand units being offered at a premium over even comparable Sony units.
Looks like the multi-format units would be preferable over the single formats, i.e., Samsung records only on (-) discs and RCA, for example, records only onto (+) discs. (I just returned a 2 day old RCA unit to Target because of that.)
I plan to record movies off my tv mainly.
Any comments/suggestions? Is LG worth the premium price?
I have just bought an LG DVD/HDD RH7500 recorder, and it’s great. It burns + and -, and can read a large variety of other disks: JPG, MP3, DivX. You can record 24 hours of TV to the HD depending on recording quality (three levels of compression available), then dub from HD to DVD-R and DVD-RW, or you can go straight from the TV to DVD. No complaints, apart from having to have the digital SCART input signal on AV2, not AV1. But that’s just aesthetic. And it would be nice if it could handle a USB disk.
I had an LG cel phone that I was really happy with (ended up replacing it with another LG), and so when I was buying computer stuff a while back I saw they had an LCD monitor at a competative price. I bought it, and have been really happy with that product as well.
I just bought a Zenith branded HD Plasma screen TV (made by LG) that sold for about $1100 less that the similar LG model that had the same resolution. They are a major electronics supplier so don’t be scared off because you haven’t seen the name alot until last year. I believe that they have been producing products for quite a long time under different brands.
I’m quite happy with my LG stuff. I have an LG washer, had an LG cellphone, and an LG microwave. Good quality, reliable. They’re relatively new to the US, but they’ve been a pretty big-name manufacturer elsewhere (like here in South Africa) for quite a while now.
LG is a Korean company that started as “Goldstar”. Goldstar products did not have the best reputation. In 1995 they changed their name to LG and bought what was left of Zenith. They seem to be working quite a bit on improving quality but based on reviews I’ve seen they are still not so great.
“LG”, specifically, refers to “Lucky Goldstar,” the Korean name.
And IMO the quality of LG products is significantly improved from what it was a few decades ago. When I was growing up, Goldstar was the brand for cheap knock-off crap – but thanks to a major management re-focusing on quality and brand-building, their stuff today rivals what you can get from more “established” companies like Panasonic and Sony (which has been on a bit of a decline of late).
I have this DVD player and it performs well for picture quality but I don’t know about long term durability, though. There’s no picture-quality adjustment or a backwards timer on it, so for that reason only I wish I’d gotten the Sony . The LG3200 cell phone I’ve had for a year has worked great, and the apartment washer has been trouble free for 2 years.
I don’t really have much LG stuff other than a DVD-ROM drive, but they are a well-established and respected brand in Europe.
Much like Samsung they used to be a cheap knockoff brand, but they saw the chinese coming and moved upmarket and are now giving the likes of Sony a good run for their money. I wouldn’t have any particular concerns over their quality, but I’m not sure I’d pay a premium for it. Personally, if the LG and Sony recorders have exactly comparable specifications and features, I’d go for the cheaper one.
I have a LG CDR/DVD drive at present and it’s worked fine for 2 years now at least (since I got the machine used). One thing I’m quite pleased with is that it’s QUIET… Had a Sony CDR drive that was not unlike having a small diesel in my box.
Didn’t know they used to be GoldStar, though… {looks nervously at his PC}
