As a UCLA alum; I hope they give all three a 2nd chance. I am sure all three are getting the scare of a lifetime. What good would expulsion do for anyone?
For Ball maybe. But the other two have great futures in basketball. Its amazingly stupid that they would go on a shoplifting spree in a foreign country. Its a property crime. May we save expulsion for physical crimes like sexual assault or battery.

I would have no problem with the students serving a short sentence similar to California law.
News reports indicated China’s law is much harsher. This case could have been a thorn in US-China relations for months. It’s better to get it settled. Our state department has much bigger issues to negotiate with China.
Coach Alford played for Bobby Knight at Indiana and the 1984 Olympic team. Alford won’t let this incident go unpunished. These knuckleheads embarrassed the school and Steve’s basketball program. They’ll be suspended for awhile. Imho

Steve Alford tried to dissuade a rape victim from pursuing criminal charges against one of his players when he was the Iowa coach. He’s no shining beacon of discipline.
I haven’t followed Steve’s career since college. I know his dad, Sam was a high school coach and Steve played for a notoriously demanding coach.
I guess Steve’s years coaching changed his priorities.

So today it was announced the three were receiving “indefinite suspension” which could either be quite long or could be one game Mike Krzyzewski style…
I’ll assume indefinite suspension means all the games before conference season begins.
That’s actually my guess too, and probably neatly aligns with the school calendar (UCLA’s fall quarter ends December 15, winter quarter begins January 3). They’re probably thinking it’ll give enough time for the attention to settle down and get the players back for the meat of the schedule.
