Here you speak a great deal about love. Does this only apply to human-on-human love?
Take dogs. Dogs are arguably more loving then most people. Are dogs ‘holier’ then people because of this? Is a person who is an utter misanthrope but cares for his fuzzy-wuzzykins still a loving person?

I would certainly hope so; for the most part I prefer dogs to people.

I suppose part of the question is whether dogs can “choose” to love.

Hmm. It seems to me that only God and dogs love us unconditonally. Hey, wait a minute! “Dog” is “God” spelled backwards! Oh. wow. man, like I think I’m onto something!
