*Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum *
We do all this. However, using the phrase ‘new King’ in the sense of now, rather than referring to the events of two millennia ago as if in the present, is a new thing to me. So yeah, it was confusing, and AFAIAC, not anywhere close to standard Christian usage.
Not being familiar with the song Giles quoted, the RNC’s release is my first exposure to the phrase ‘new King’ referring to Christ at all. The closest I can think of is “Hark, the herald angels sing, glory to the newborn King.”
Perhaps you were expecting them name Ganesha as their top deity?
Baaaaaaaaad! ![]()
Wow, even an idiot can see the obvious, divisive game the 'Pubes are playing and as usual their loyal lackeys play weasel word games and act all innocent. Well, technically it maybe kinda sorta if you make believe, references Jesus. Sorta like how they call Obama a monkey, but yanno, we didn’t mean anything *racist *by it or anything.
Sad.
I expect them to recognize that not all people, not even all Republicans, are Christian.
Outraged liberal journalists and the twitterati were besides themselves with shock and horror.
Following your link, I found specific references to only three media outlets criticizing the press release, and of those three, the only one that came remotely close to being ‘beside itself with shock and horror’ was Fox Sports.
Unless MSNBC’s “No joke—This line is actually in the RNC’s Christmas message" counts as being beside oneself in shock and horror.
Sounds like your reaction to the ‘liberal media’ reaction is way more extreme than their reaction itself was.

Your analysis may be more accurate, but the OP’s account has way, WAY more Truthiness.
I’m not outraged by it, but I think there’s a subtext there. When the RNC says “Savior” and “King” you aren’t just supposed to think of the Christ Child. Would the RNC have put out a Christmas message worded that way in 2015? Or even in 2008, after Obama was elected?
No they wouldn’t. In fact at Christmas 2008 Chip Saltsman who was running for RNC chairmanship sent out a CD featuring the song Barack the Magic Negro. I don’t think it was an expression of regard for Obama.

Cthulhu. He has cookies.
The RNC released this Christmas message
Outraged liberal journalists and the twitterati were besides themselves with shock and horror. “They’re calling Trump a King”, came the cry. “Will they stop at nothing?”
As the article says, these people just don’t get Christianity. I’m an atheist and even I know that Christ is referred to by Christians as the New King.
Idiots.
Cite for examples of shock and horror?
All I know is that you cannot put a crown on a clown and expect a king. lol
We don’t have “kings”, capitalized or no. Kind of the whole point, as I understood it. Valley Forge, all that stuff.
In fairness, Trump seems pretty enthusiastic about New King stuff.
We really need a Drag Him Out and Shoot Him smiley.
This is America. We don’t have kings.
Or lords (I kinda feel like I shouldn’t have to point that out).
ETA: Dang, ninja’d. Oh, well, at least I was ninja’d by the best.

Mary’s Boy Child. Very popular for the past sixty years, especially the Harry Belafonte version.
We’re making too much out of a simple typo and the premature release of a message. Of course they’ll urge us to celebrate the good news of a nuking.
Sorry, missed the earlier post. Withdrawn.

Agreed. They’ve really made fools of themselves over this one.
This is Literacy 101. This is not some weird, abstract symbolism your crazy sophomore-year English teacher made up, like “Green is the color of frogs, so the green light means that Gatsby is actually an amphibian.”
Come on. Support whomever you support, but the ‘interpretation’ that this alludes to Trump is so obvious and obviously-intended as to be not an interpretation at all, but a simple statement of fact. Any supposedly informed and educated adult who honestly can’t see it should be embarrassed about their ability to comprehend language the big kids are using.
