Actually, it’s an unusual side effect of infant chickenpox.
I wonder what was to be gained by of either of these lies. I’m guessing attention, but this is The Dope. So, I doubt either of these things were really considered a scandal. To be honest, I don’t see how dieing in 9/11 would be a scandal anywhere. So…
I kind of don’t understand the logic. Not to this, but when it was expanded upon that calling a liar a liar is wrong. How is it wrong if were caught in a lie? So, we can’t call someone who admits they take money for sex a whore?
People have lied on this this board and been caught in it before. Some of the lies were very elaborate as well. However, your lie detector is faulty because I am sure no one was lying in the thread you were talking about. You just have a poor grasp of the age distribution of people in the U.S. and how that branches out like a spider web to map to a large number of descendants. There is nothing mysterious or unbelievable about that. There are a lot of things associated with rare events that still become almost certain when you have a large enough sample of people reporting and understand the intricacies of statistics. I honestly think you need learn some more about statistical events maybe by asking the same question but phrased a General Question. If you go around accusing people of lying things that are perfectly reasonable and believable, it just makes you look bad because you don’t understand the stats behind it well enough.
I don’t have any grandparents that have lived to be over 100 but my great-great grandfather was one of the last living Civil War soldiers and died in 1950 at 100. You may not think that is believable but I can show you the Life magazine article on it online. I also just changed the example to the only one that fits a relative of mine rather than a specific one. That increases the universe of potential matches enormously. That is all other people were doing as well.
There is a lot of post stalking (as I like to call it). That’s why I refrain from posting a lot of personal information. Sometimes don’t get too into with people on here. Because I know it could brought up later. I have to say if you’re a post stalker you’re a douche.
I feel sometimes Dopers like to call people out on stuff because they have “proof”, even if they have to use said “proof” out of context. As much as many people say they don’t like mean jokes or putting others down, a lot of people on here love to single people out and become a mob. Then say it’s ok no like X anyway.
I will say Dopers in general seem to lie about money. They tend to say things that aren’t true when you check with statics. They majority seem frugal, BUT they the majority all seem to think any thing under 5 million dollars is diddly squat. So, yeah.
Also, I think a lot of Dopers aren’t truthful about their relationships. Make them out to be a lot better than what they are. I think a lot of married/coupled Dopers feel superior to singles. Often seem very snide when single get invovled or GASP. Give advice. Just because someone is single doesn’t mean they’ve never had a ltr or been married.
To wrap it up, I’m not sure if this is lying or just omitting. Whatever. It’s being truthful either way.
Oh, for fuck’s sake. You can call people whatever you like in the Pit. Go there now.
I think you’re just saying that so no one can claim all that reward money. Mods NOTE I’m NOT calling him a LIAR.
It’s not my point of calling someone a name good or bad. It’s that yeah some names might be offensive, but it’s true. Look it up, a whore is a person who has sex for money. A liar is a person who LIES. You know what the funny thing? Liars (and I’m talking real life here) get the most offended when you actually call them that. Basically, if it the shoe fits wear it and don’t be a crybaby.
You are the one that called other people liars falsely. What is the name for that? I wasn’t one of the ones you called out but any of us could be one day because you don’t know nearly as much as you think you do about “statics”[sic]. The real danger is letting you go around thinking you made an actual valid call when you didn’t.
You mean, only posters who are *willing to boast *about their IQ are willing to post. I assure you, there are plenty a’classy poster lurking in those IQ threads with IQ scores to write home about who wouldn’t be caught dead posting such a thing.
I don’t know if you noticed. Just as you didn’t notice that your great great grandfather was 11 when the Civil War started. Not saying he didn’t serve, but just making an observaton… I wasn’t the only saying I thought the numbers were skewed. So, are you going to call everyone out about making false claims?
I am talking about people were caught in lies. Great observation skills.
I just sent you verification on that by request complete with a Life magazine article from May 23, 1949 via PM. Check it out and let me know if you want more. I have extremely good genealogy records on hand plus my grandfather is still alive and grew up with him (his grandfather).
You see, that wasn’t a lie. All I did was share a random fact about my family that was unrelated to those of others. It sounds unbelievable but that is the trick. I picked the best one I had to share. That is what other people are doing too if they have one and that is the part you don’t get. People share odd things here because they tend to come up as questions. A given thread may have several thousand people read it and only a few will have weird and relevant examples to share but that means that many threads are filled with remarkable things because the pool to select from is so large.
That does not mean that everyone here has grandparents that routinely live to 100. Having a single grandparent live to 100 isn’t even nearly as rare as you think either. Everyone who’s grandparents all died by the time they were 80 didn’t respond in that way because it isn’t a remarkable comment.
This thread is about ME, isn’t it?! ::runs sobbing for his blankey::
If I’m not mistaken, this is the one that prompted what is perhaps my favorite insult ever, whose exact wording I can’t recall, but accused the poster of something like building “a house of lies with a thatched roof of bullshit.” Hilarious.
In answer to the OP’s question, there are numerous times when I know the posters here are lying. Welcome to the internet!
I guess my mind has too many holes to keep track of who said what when. Today you could say you’re a lawyer and tomorrow you could say you’re an astronaut, and I wouldn’t even notice.
Even when people post ridiculous things (like having an IQ of 180), I don’t believe they’re lying. I think they either citing some score they got on some crappy internet test, or their parents pumped them up with a bunch of bullshit. I don’t know. It doesn’t really matter to me, because I probably won’t remember what they said the next time I read their next post.
I am always impressed when someone catches a liar, though. How was that one guy who turned out NOT to be the transsexual grammer school teacher uncovered?
I don’t mean to imply the opposite thing as you because I am not. There have been a number of fabulous liars on this message board. Some have been exposed as frauds and others are simply unbelievable because the stats are basically impossible (IQ threads are the best example). However, my point is that just because you read a bunch of remarkable claims here doesn’t mean that most people are lying. They are self-selecting for the types of things they post and the universe of facts combined with the number of potential posters is extremely large. There is no need to post in a special message about height if you are a 5’9" male for example because that is average. You will get mostly posts from people that deviate from it.
When someone self-selects fro the types of things that they post, it does end up sounding rather unbelievable but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. Let me use myself for an example to illustrate this trick.
Pick the one statement below that isn’t true about me.
- I went to an Ivy League grad school.
- I am an heir to a family fortune.
- I can play the guitar very well.
- I am a direct male descendant of a Jamestown colonist before the Mayflower and still hold the last name.
I can’t play the guitar at all let alone any other musical instrument even though that would be the most common fact about the population as a whole. Those other fun facts are true but I selected them out of every possible fact I have about myself. I also have two children and drive a Toyota. My penis size is within the normal range. I am not that remarkable at all but, like most people, there I have some interesting facts that apply if I select them myself where relevant.
I’m the opposite. Unless it’s within the same thread, it always slight disgusts me when someone goes so far out of their way to dig up someone’s posting history. Or go even further than that. They act like they’re Sherlock Holmes when they’re really just a loser with too much time.
Not saying you’re doing this, but I suppose if your posts often contain incredible claims, a different one for every topic, you invite scrutiny. It’s kind of like, if you open enough windows into your life, eventually someone’s going to poke a head into one of them to find out what’s really inside.
It’s kind of like a coworker who I worked with. She talked so much about her personal life and would play the one ups-manship game with you (oh, you went to Mexico? Well, I spent a whole year hiking through all of Latin America!), that she just looked like a liar. Maybe she actually was 100% truthful, but her stories were so hard to believe, in addition to being braggadocious, that you just wanted her to shut up.
Oh, I don’t even think every story of having a high IQ or being a zillionaire is a lie, but I do think it’s funny how everyone naturally thought of those threads. I’m sure there’s some validity to the self selection theory. The internet is home to crowds of the notoriously immodest as well as unabashed liars. Those threads tend to assemble a collection of the proud, the exaggerators and the outright full of it. But I wasn’t even thinking about those when I commented. I was thinking about the many times I’ve come across stories in ordinary advice threads, for example, that send my bullshit-o-meter into the red. People being completely full of shit about things I cannot understand for the life of me why anyone would want to be full of shit about. Other times people puff up or entirely fabricate stories with the ostensible motive to help further their agenda. Just lies all around, often for no apparent reason at all, and others for silly reasons.
There’s a thread I read earlier today that I got two lines into the OP before thinking “This is total bullshit.” It wasn’t a story about being immensely wealthy or educated or good looking. It was just a fucking lie and everybody knows it, but the OP has an angle, and so shit was just made up entirely. Happens all the time online in a way I seldom encounter in person, I suspect because even the most lyingest liar or the most shameless braggart couldn’t say this crap out loud with a straight face.
I think I’m going to shut this down now. If y’all want to throw accusations of lying around, take it to The BBQ Pit.
