Life imitates 24

LOS ANGELES (April 29) - A terrorism task force was investigating an “uncorroborated” threat to a Los Angeles area shopping mall where federal officials say an attack may have been planned for Thursday.

“As of now, the information is uncorroborated and the credibility of the source is unknown,” the LAPD said in a statement.

No specific shopping mall was named, but the warning indicated a mall near the Federal Building in West Los Angeles could be targeted.

The LAPD will increase patrols at shopping malls in the city and asked mall operators to beef up security while a joint terrorism task force investigates. The department said it would have no further comment beyond the statement issued late Wednesday.

Mayor James Hahn’s spokeswoman Shannon Murphy said that while the threat was uncorroborated, the city was “asking all Los Angeles residents to go on with their daily lives while remaining vigilant and alert.”

Very sucky. Hopefully there’s nothing to it. As far as like imitating 24, there was a plot to bomb LA International Airport on New Years’ Eve 2000, and that was well before 24 made our Tuesdays shine.

Like I mentioned in the latest weekly thread, during the commercial break right after Saunders gives the order to release the virus in San Francisco, my local (SF) newscast ran a teaser asking, “Are our nuclear labs secure against terrorism? And what is being done to keep the Golden Gate Bridge safe now that the National Guard is leaving?”

I’m not worried, since last week we learned that there’s a CTU San Francisco.

Spooky stuff. One of the things that makes the show so intense is that these scenarios are very plausable. Sure, they get a little far-fetched at times and the gimmick/cliffhanger nature of the show can lend itself to unrealistic situations, but the underlying issues are all very real. We may very well face attacks using WMD. The people protecting us must make some very difficult decisions at times. And, at times, some of those decisionss may cross into grey areas of morality. Hopefully, shows like this help us to understand just how awful things can get, and what it is we are trying to prevent in the world. Of course, it is easy to point out what is wrong, and alot harder to come up with a good fix. While ‘24’ can raise some tough questions, ultimately, it is up to humanity to answer them.
