Life Savers Candy Memories

Yeah, they were menthol flavor. Yick! I loved the orange and cream suckers myself.

Yes. That’s it. I’ve been trying most of the day to decide what “mint” that was, and I smoked Salems and Benson & Hedges Menthol and the occasional Newport or Kool. Guess they didn’t make as big an impression as I might have thought.

But it was menthol for sure.

One of my buddies, in spite of warnings from me and others that they were hazardous, was smoking clove cigarettes the last time I saw him. That’s been several years now. Last I heard he was still smoking them. One version of the “hazardous” I heard was that they perforate your lungs or something as hideous.

Anyway, I never asked him if he liked clove Life Savers. Maybe he likes clove oil at the dentist and figures it’s a pain reliever for his lungs  He has to buy them as imports from SE Asia.

When I was in the seventh grade (c. 1975) I had a paper route. At Christmas my customers, in a rush of appreciation of how I always placed their papers between the screen door and the big door, gave me presents of the most wonderous sort. My favoritest was a book of Life Savers. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to eat them or just look at them, in their charming little book. I got a lot of little Christmas presents from my route customers, and I’ve forgotten all of them except the darling, delicious little book of light sabers.

I mean Life Savers.

Man, you all got Life Saver books? All I ever got were those Reed’s imposter books. No wonder I’m so anti-social.
