I have returned. From two months in Ecuador, where I had many exciting adventures, including being bitten by a snake in the jungle, 3 hours from civilization. Everyone should go, but not all at once, it’s a small country. For whoever it was that wanted a shot of Aguas Caliente in Peru- I didn’t make it down there, but my friend did, and maybe I can get an electronic copy. While there are certain things I enjoy about being home, I’d rather be there for another two or even four months.
So for those of us who missed the beginning of the story, what were you doing in Ecuador?
I, in turn, am quite happy to be back in the states. Perhaps if I had experienced some run ins with bad cheese I’d be more bent on returning.
Anyway, welcome back!
Incidentally, my father the history teacher cannot stop laughing over you using me and MacArthur in the same phrase.
Eonwe-- I was bummin’ around Ecuador for pleasure and to broaden my horizons, etc. I was there 4 years ago for less tan 3 weeks on a college trip, and decided that I’d have to go back on my own. As a geologist and biologist by degree, I found the physical country fascinating. And as a traveler, the sights, activities, and people were amazing. (Also, any budget traveler worth their salt has to go to SA sometime, usually early in their voyages.)
andygirl- My despair at returning is several fold- going back to work being chief among them. Also, in the two months I had, I was planning on going from Quito south to Cuzco, perhaps even Lake Titicaca (who can resist a name like that?). But I only made it as far as southern Ecuador before having to turn back to catch my flight home out of Quito. And two months is just long enough to really want to stay a lot longer. I do like being able to eat salads, drink from the faucet, and flush the tp, among other creature comforts we have here. And glad to have given your pops a little something to chuckle about.
That’s awesome. I’ve got a friend about to graduate college who’s planning on going to Costa Rica for an extended voyage after doing a stint there for two weeks.
On a slightly off-topic:
I see in your profile you’re from Alameda, CA? All I can think of when I see that is the scene in (if you’re put off by people with a slightly obsessive passion for Star Trek, stop reading now) Star Trek IV where Chekov is in San Fransisco looking for the “nuclear wessels” and some lady tells him she thinks they’re “across the bay, in Alameda.”
I now return you to your regularly scheduled programing.
