Likely spot for mice to enter a car?

I’m getting sick of cleaning out mouse nests in the spare tire well in the back of my Subaru outback, and I’m planning to tear out the upholstry to find the hole that they are using to get in. Does anyone know where the most likely spot is? I know there are usually holes through the firewall. Anywhere else I should look?

Apparently a typical mouse entry point is through the cowl, between the windshield and the hood; hardware cloth covering that vent will keep them out.

Thank you! You just saved me a lot of work!

I’ll second that. On five of my cars, I’ve had to pull off the cowl panel (usually not too hard) and glue (I use silicone sealant) hardware cloth (metal screen) over the openings which lead into the car’s heating system. Just did it this last Tuesday on our Chrysler minivan–turns out there’s another vent which leads directly from the cowl plenum into the interior, without going through the heater.

I’ve also become pretty adept at pulling my cars’ heater fans to remove mouse nests.

I misread the title as being “cat” instead of “car.” Never mind…

there could be a drain hole right under the spare
