Do you not see a distinction between saying “thank you” for something and saying “2 points to Gryffindor!”?

On this board, with its particular culture? No, I don’t see a difference, if the number of thanks are tracked.

Never mind that I suggested making these “thanks” a private communication to mitigate the risk of people scorekeeping.

That’s your suggestion, but that’s not how like/kudos systems are implemented on any messageboards I know of, and you weren’t the only one proposing like/upvote/kudos systems…

I guess I should have expected the onslaught of the SDMB pedants when I mentioned gamification casually.

Maybe it’s the fact that you act as though you’re the be-all and end-all of what is and isn’t gamification? As though the rest of us are ignorant about what it is (and isn’t)

The original point is that people like to be recognized for a job well done and recognizing them makes it far more likely that they’ll continue to do a good job. Is this seriously a controversial idea?

No, it not.

The issue is about those (older) poor elements of gamification design, which even gamification proponents have dropped as poor design choices, like leaderboards and other scorekeeping elements.

My question was about how this is functionally different. Yes, hidden thanks systems would be great, but like I said, that would be novel and (AFAIK) not built into the Board software.

This place is so absurd sometimes.

Weird, I don’t remember asking for a popularity feature. We already have polls, but I think you already knew that.

With this being such a high-minded board I think the debaters and commentators are perfectly capable of refuting a argument who’s supporting facts are based “number of thanks”. That said, with the number of strawmen propped up in this thread maybe I’m over-estimating our skills.
