Lilo & Stitch DVD - Disney double selling?

[sub]Might be CS material. If so, feel free to move there.[/sub]

As many of you are probably aware, I’ve been itching for the Lilo & Stitch DVD to be released. The DVD will be a single disc release.

However, I’ve been hearing rumors that Disney will be releasing a 2-disc set within a few months, with lots of other goodies on it. Unfortunately, I have found no varification of this anywhere.

Has Disney done this in the past (put out one version, but held off announcing a special edition until shortly after the first edition was released)? Are they likely to do this with L&S?

i don’t know if Disney has done it in the past but i do know that a few other companies have…Lord of the Rings is the first one that comes to mind. there is always talk of a “special edition” dvd months after the original came out. i believe it is a way to milk money from us.

With LOTR it was widely known that a “special edition” was going to be released in November before the first DVD was released.

There is nothing definite from Disney yet. The best I can offer is this column from Michelle, the Fabulous Disney Babe over at The Laughing Place who says that there will be. For my money, her prognostications are usually right on target.

LOTR might be considered a bad example. The only thing the two versions have in common is a copy of the theatrical release on the DVD. Otherwise, the two contain completely separate extras, commentaries, documentaries, etc.

A better LOTR example would be the Special Platinum Edition and the Special Platinum Edition Collector’s Set. The DVD is the same, you just get two statues and a special box with the Collector’s set, for about $25-$40 more.

So, there are technically THREE editions of LOTR DVD being sold

critter42

The theatrical version of the film is not available on the second, most-recently-released DVD of Fellowship of the Ring. Only the expanded version of the film can be played across the two discs. If you want the theatrical release, you have to buy the previous DVD.

Additionally, and not to pile on critter42, the Collector’s set also includes an extra DVD with a National Geographic documentary on it.

Almost Famous was released twice and I bought it twice. I wanted the first one and then they released the damn thing with 35 minutes of extra footage edited back in.

Since this question has been answered, I believe, to the best of anybody’s ability, I’m going to move it to Cafe Society for further discussion of DVD double dipping.

Back to Lilo & Stitch: I believe the Fabulous Disney Babe for the most part, and even moreso, I can’t imagine that Disney wouldn’t release a special edition. That’s what they’re all about these days; getting as much DVD “product” out there as possible.

And yes, Disney definitely has done the double-dipping thing before. It could be just because I was most affected by it (since one of the main reasons I first got a DVD player was to get the Disney library), but IIRC they were the worst offenders. First was a bug’s life, which had a completely lackluster release that was followed a few months’ later by the special edition. I also bought the no-frills version of Peter Pan shortly before a special edition was released to coincide with the sequel.
