I didn’t see the point in comparing Bush to Hitler. There were enough realistic criticisms about his horror show of a presidency without hyperbole. People that carry swastikas to health care discussions are unfortunate idiots who have let their emotion overtake their brain.
It’s entirely possible a good portion of the protests are manufactured but I think it’s pretty clear that many good citizens have real concerns that need to be addressed. Pelosi and Ried need to shut their pieholes about astroturf. That doesn’t change the fact that she did not refer to protesters as Nazis.
It just shows how inadequate the whole left-right linear reduction is. Using it, you can equate Gandhi and Mandela and Jesus with Hitler and Stalin and Mao. Left means caring about other people before yourself, right means belief in domination through power or birth or money. It is perfectly possible (though unlikely today!) to believe in being born to a superior class or race that obliges you to care for and protect your ‘inferiors’ (Noblesse oblige). It is even more possible (because some of the worst people I’ve met were it) to quote that We are all born equal so because ‘I’ have made myself what ‘I’ call 'superior (by cheating and lying and fixing money games and only money matters), ‘I’ have proven myself to be a ‘superior person’.
There are two axes (at least). One is between selfishness (Idividualistic) and view of self as only part of the generality all with equal freedoms (Communal) and the other is between Imposing Order (Authoritarian) and working together by common consent (Liberal). Then again, Rightist politics usually imposes strict control over personal relationships while allowing freedom to exploit and enslave economically, while Left controls economics to allow emotional and sexual freedom. So maybe it is not just the 2-D that some tests make it, but more 3-D.
Historically, governments have been Authoritarian, Individualistic and socially determinative. That led to the very bad mistake that wrecked Hippy and Feminist freedom, assuming that opposing any one of those opposed the others too. Individualistic Hippies are the parents of the Reagon Me and look at my money generation and grandparents of this this do what I freaking want unless you stop me generation - yet so much like the old Wild West.
