Urban Legend. Upon seeing this, I said no immediately, but just to be sure, especially since I’d not heard this before, I checked her imdb bio and no mention of this.
Lawrence Welk may have fired a few female performers over the years for violating a dress code, but the most famous was Alice Lon. That was in 1959 – when Linda Rondstadt was 13.
I seriously doubt Linda Ronstadt was a regular performer on the Lawrence Welk show. I’ve been a fan of hers since I was in Grade 6 (still am) and I’ve never heard any mention of it in any biography, seen any pictures, or heard any reference in interviews.
You can see her sing with Johnny Cash on his show on YouTube, though.
Mentioned in another thread, but it’s because of several videos appearing that disparaged the king. Insulting the king is a serious crime here; you can and will go to prison for several years for an offense. I’d always thought seven years in prison was the penalty, but lately I’ve been hearing 15 years. Don’t know if they changed it or what.
Perhaps someone is confusing Linda with Anacani, a pretty young Mexican singer who was a regular on the show in the early '70s. She would often sing in Spanish, and I suppose if you squinted enough, she looked a bit like Ronstadt.
It is absolutely true. My family only got one TV channel when I was young, and my dad always watched Welk. I never cared for it until Linda came on. She just loved to tie her shirt under her breasts, and I just loved it too.
She was the token female country singer and “Clay Hart” was the token male.
I think this was after the “Stone Poneys” but before she became a superstar in her own right.
Probably confusion with when Ronstadt was starting out, she appeared on Johnny Cash’s tv show. She showed up not wearing panties and June Carter Cash told Linda that she was NOT getting onstage without panties to sing with her husband. June tells the story in a dvd release of the show.
Not sure how you confuse Mr Wunnerful with he Man in Black but stuff like that happens
The web site imdb.com has entries for the Lawrence Welk Show, and Linda Ronstadt is not on there (although it says John Travolta was on a show), and also for Linda Ronstadt, and the Lawrence Welk Show is not mentioned on her page. It shows that she kept herself busy enough that I don’t know where she would have found the time to be on the Lawrence Welk Show.
Unfortunately, that’s a very poor form of evidence. It’s more likely that your memory is confusing her with another singer or another show. It happens all the time and it’s a well documented part of our memories.
The problem is that there’s no additional evidence to support you and lots and lots of evidence that contradicts you. In the grand scheme of things, it appears more likely that you are confused until a tape of the show or other supporting evidence emerges.
I’ll just add that while at this point, there’s no corroboration that Linda was on the Welk program, there’s nothing to rule it out, either. Welk did have guest singers occasionally, and sometimes he would give a shout-out to some special audience member of some note.
That said, I’m not buying for a moment that Linda–or any of his female singers–appeared with a tied-up shirt. And the OP asked (six years ago) whether she was a regular member, not a guest–and that answer is a definite “No.”
