Was a member of Lawrence Welk's band ever involved in a public scandal?

Some mentioned this to me, that a member of Welk’s band had gotten into some scandal at some point either because of a) some kind of improper kind of contact with a minor, or b) he was found to be in the closet. The most scandalous things I can remember about Lawrence Welk were Alice Lon’s firing (before my time) due to showing too much knee (so we were told), and Guy and Ralna’s divorce. Anyone remember any details?

Hardly the scandal you might be thinking, but the only other thing I ever heard of beside Alice Lon wasWelk firing Pete Fountain for being to jazzy.

I guess that qualifies as a scandal.

I know my boyhood fantasies would’ve conjured up some searing sex scandal for Anacani

Just in passing.
I had the show on this past Sunday, and Welk was introducing a black tap dancer, as a ‘credit to his race’.

Wunnerful.

Arthur Duncan! All us kids would stop whatever we were doing when Arthur came on and then jump up and down in front of the TV imitating him. I don’t care what anybody says, Arthur was a credit to every race.

My favorite Welk story was when he was introducing the next song.

The real title of the song was Take The “A” Train.

Welk was reading from a cue card and said, “The next song is Take A Train”.

I don’t remember any scandal though…but back in the days when even one television in a household was a rarity, we kids hated that program but our parents insisted on tuning in every week. Everybody was so damned perky on that show and you never saw so many teeth in your life as the smiles they beamed. Think perpetual grimace on every performer. Plus, polyester as far as the eye could see…with colors louder than the horn section.
