So here’s the issue: as part of a minor homework assignment I’m supposed to state whether the English ‘for’ is a complementizer or preposition. I remember from an article I read a long while ago that, due to grammaticalization, ‘for’ can be proven to be a preposition that borrows the complementizer class in certain contexts. What I’m wondering is (and please, please don’t do the work for me), since I’ve only about two years of linguistic theory, what avenue of investigation/analysis should I follow in order to come up with a basic argument about the syntactic value of ‘for’?
