Short version:
I can’t get Ubuntu to recognize I have an HP touchpad connected to the USB port but it works when I connect through Windows Vista. How can I get ubuntu to recognize the device?
More details:
I have an HP touchpad that appears to be bricked. There is a posted fix here:
When I get to the step that tells me to use the Power + Home + Voldown buttons Ubuntu does not recognize the device is connected. Using the same cable and USB port, Windows (vista) will recognize something is connected but gives me an error that it can’t find the driver QHSUSB_DLOAD. This is exactly the state the device needs to get into for the tpdebrick fix to see the device and fix it. So I’m stuck. How do I get ubunto to recognize the device? I tried connecting another USB device to the same USB port and ubuntu sees that device, so I know ubuntu is seeing the port.
I’ve tried a search to see if anyone else has had this issue but I can’t find any references to it. I was thinking of trying a different computer to see if that will help. I’m running the 12.04 64 bit version of ubuntu that runs off the DVD.
Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Firstly, have you posed your question on the Ubuntu Forums?
Knowledge of Ubuntu related problems is likely to be greater there.
Have you tried a more recent version (13.04)?
Also, give Linux Mint Olivia a run - some Ubuntu problems disappear when using Mint.
I’d go for that - Seems to me that Linux is a bit more strict about the integrity of USB devices - I’ve had flash drives that were in some way corrupted - Windows could mount them and let me pull a few files off or run a lower-level recovery utility, whereas Linux just didn’t want anything to do with it.
If you don’t have handy access to a Windows box, you could install Virtualbox, create a virtual machine, then download and install XP on it - it will run in trial mode without activation for long enough to use it to (try to) fix your touchpad.
My main computer at home is a Windows box and that does recognize the Touchpad is there when I use the magic key combination. It is when I run Ubuntu that I can’t get the computer to recognize the device.
I searched the ubuntu forums for this issue, but couldn’t find any references there. I’ll see about posting there after I’ve tried running ubuntu on another computer.
How are you determining that linux isn’t recognizing it? Does it say anything in /var/log/syslog when you 1) plug the device into the usb port and 2) press the key combo
First, when the tpdebrick script runs is comes up with a message prompting the user to connect the device and press the key combo. It waits for the key combo for a while, then the script stops and says something about a timeout waiting for the device to be connected. So it seems the script never recognizes the device.
Second, when I connected an mp3 player to the same usb port there was an immediate message the popped up on the desktop asking what I’d like to do (open the device, etc.).
I did try the key combo without the script running but there was never any response from ubuntu. Windows would respond when the same combo was pressed using the same usb port and cable.
