Lipitor and cholesterol: Does it really matter whether it's genetic or behavioral?

I hate those Lipitor commercials, which claim that the product controls “both kinds of cholesterol” – that caused by diet, and that caused by genetic predisposition.

Isn’t it the same substance? Aren’t they making an artificial distinction, in order to make their product sound more effective? Isn’t this just as ridiculous as claiming that it controls “both kinds of cholesterol – the one that starts with the letter ‘c’, and the one that ends with the letter ‘l’”?

I was going to put this in the Pit, but I wanted to make sure I had my facts straight first.

Bumpity-bump.

Not according to my doctor. He seems to think that my genetic predisposition to higher cholesterol keeps my numbers high, even though my diet is designed to be low cholesterol.

I think you’re being confused by not realizing that how the body processes the cholesterol that comes into the body is a different thing than cholesterol intake. The Lipitor commercial does simplify the difference, but it is an ad, after all.

P.S. A bump after 35 minutes? WTF? Bump if you haven’t heard after a day and 35 minutes.

Got it, thanks!

I won’t have time to check the SDMB later today, and my thread would have been buried deep by tomorrow (I know, I know, I could search, but not worth it in this case), so I knew my best shot was to bump now or never – especially because it’s a question that can be answered quite well with just one reply post.

And it worked… thanks to you.

Over and out.
