List of all films released in the US in 2009

I started thinking about all the movies I saw in the theater this year, which was a lot, even for me, and wanted to figure out exactly how many. My memory is for shit anymore, so I figured I’d just look at a list of all 2009 releases in the U.S. There’s gotta be such a list somewhere, but I’m not seeing it at IMDb – any suggestions?

This list at IMDB gives you ALL the movies for 2009. Foreign, too. There’s about 30k of them :o

Not sure how you could easily pare them down to US-only.

Yeah, that seems a wee bit unwieldy. :stuck_out_tongue:

This is not exact, in that some films were released in 2009 that are not eligible for the 2009-10 Academy Awards, and some that are eligible but won’t be in wide release until 2010, but it’ll get you close.

Obviously, just because a film is eligible doesn’t mean it’s Oscar-worthy, it just means that it’s eligible. The ones in bold are the ones I saw (that I remember) and the ones in italics are ones that I know I’ll be seeing in the next couple/few weeks. Underlined are movies that I particularly liked, which is not to say I thought less of so many others, they just happen to be particular favorites. There are a lot of good movies I missed. ** is by the ones that I’m really kicking myself about, of the ones I’m aware, I know there are others I should have seen.

I just realized that list can’t be completely right for the Oscars. Up In The Air is not there, and it’s definitely eligible!

Here’s a PDF of all the films eligible for the 2009 Oscars.

Per a message there, the “U” list is incomplete:

THE UGLY TRUTH
THE UNBORN
UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS
THE UNINVITED
(UNTITLED)
UP
UP IN THE AIR

ETA: Oops, just saw ArchiveGuy’s link – thanks.

If you go to the search bar at the top of the page and choose “Advanced Search” from the pull-down menu and then “Power Search” from the left side, you can limit it by country of origin and/or language and exclude direct-to-DVD releases and television productions, which should reduce the results by several thousand. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any way to exclude short subjects or films that have only shown in festivals or limited releases, which probably account for the majority of results.

Wikipedia has a more sensibly sized list, but I have no idea of it’s accuracy or completeness.

Box Office Mojo is a possible source, but it looks like it only displays one month at a time.

ETA: And that’s what happens when you take 40 minutes to post.

Ooops, the list was still on my clipboard.

Ah, I didn’t even read the comments on that page. I should have taken a bit more time.

Here’s my list, which may not be complete:

  1. Angels & Demons
  2. Art & Copy
  3. Capitalism: A Love Story
  4. Coco Before Chanel
  5. An Education
  6. (500) Days Of Summer
  7. The Hangover
  8. Julie & Julia
  9. The Men Who Stare At Goats
  10. The September Issue
  11. Seraphine
  12. Slum Dog Millionaire
  13. Star Trek
  14. Up In The Air
  15. The Wrestler

(I realize #12 and #15 were 2008 films; #2 and #11 weren’t on the “Oscar eligible” list, dunno why, but I saw all of these in the theater this year.)

ETA: Damn, plus The Road. 16.

ETA: Easy Virtue. 17.

ETA: Eleven Minutes, a documentary about “Project Runway” winner Jay McCarroll. 18.

I’ve only seen four from Equipoise’s list - Coraline, In the Loop, Soul Power, and Star Trek. Pretty sad, but not unusual for me - I’m really bad about seeing movies in the theater. Soul Power I saw with the people in the seminar on the music of the African diaspora that I took this semester; I wouldn’t even have known about it otherwise. And I, uh, didn’t exactly see In the Loop in a theater, but I will if/when it plays someplace near me and I can figure out how to get there.

One of the fun things back in the days I worked in a film studio was reading Hollywood Reporter and Variety in the months before the Oscar nominations came around. I know it was in the contracts, but studios would have a full page ad with “For Your Consideration” at the bottom - hoping to get an Oscar nod; the fun part was reading some of those ads that were for truly horrible films! Films that bombed, films that practically went straight to video, films that hardly anyone had ever heard of, nominees like, Pauly Shore or some such actor who had as much a chance of winning an Oscar as I did.

Still, pretty much any film released in the US during the calendar year, in a theatrical performance, is officially eligible to be nominated.
