I am looking for a list of immune-system suppressing substances, both drug related and other. Does anyone have such a list, or can point me to it? During my internet search I could find nothing but help sites for various diseases; nothing on a large list of suppresive substances.
Thanks in advance.
Mods: Though this isn’t a factual question, I’m requesting factual data. If you feel this is the wrong forum, please move it to where it belongs.
Good luck with that, it’s a pretty tall order, and will include an awful lot of stuff.
Sort of like asking for a list of all the chemicals ever found in water.
Off the top of my head, corticosteroids (like prednisone, etc), azathioprine, basiliximab, cyclosporine, daclizumab, mycophenolate, sirolimus, tacrolimus, sirolimus, muromonab, cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and mercaptopurine, are all pharmacologic agents currently in use as specific therapies to suppress the immune response for cases where such suppression is medically necessary.
But that’s just barely scratching the surface of all pharmacologics which are known to be immunosuppressants. I know I’m forgetting other ones that I’ve even prescribed before.
But many such compounds were never brought to market due to other problems with their use, such as excess toxicity or insufficient activity.
I can’t give you a list, but you can put Plaquenil on it for starters at any rate. It’s used by people suffering from a variety of autoimmune disorders, most prominently rheumatoid arthritis but also including multiple sclerosis (off-label use) and, I believe, lupus.
Would the list be narrowed specifically if i looked for immunosuppresants that can be found in foods (if any) or common stomachache/pain relief drugs that suppress immune action as a side effect?
