Little Black Frying Pan

Who knows the trick to the game, “In my little black frying pan, I see [object]… Who am I thinking of?” It’s a puzzle where you have to know the trick to know who the person is thinking of. Does anyone know this game and the trick behind it?

Does it really have to be something that will fit in the frying pan? It seems a bit limiting.

The version I heard was that person A (asking the questions)does not have answer in mind, but the answer depends on the questions asked by B and the way in which they are phrased. If the question ends in a vowel, the answer is “yes”, if a consonant, the answer is “no”. (I sometimes decided that “y” could be a vowel.

It can be fun observing how your friends minds work, as they work themselves into situations that are amusing, weird, or quite embarrassing. Does this sound like your game? (Oh, and do you in fact have any really good tips re. how to clean disgusting black frying pans? No? Damn clever question title, then - it made me look!

Welcome to the board, hoggie90 (hmmm, haven’t seen hoggies 1 through 89 around lately…).

Could this be a pattern:

Q. In my little black frying pan, I see crayons. Who am I thinking of?"
A. Connor

Q. In my little black frying pan, I see halogen lights. Who am I thinking of?"
A. Hoggie90

Q. In my little black frying pan, I see ssugar. Who am I thinking of?"
A. Satan

I guess I should clarify how the game works a little bit. First, you need many people in this game for it to work correctly. The reason is because if they are only 3 person and only 1 person knows the trick, there are only 2 choices of people he’s thinking of. He has to ‘think’ about a person who is present in the game by the way. Let’s say there are 6 people involved and they are together in a living room. I’ve noticed that they are at least 2 persons who know the trick (let’s say person A & B). Person A will say, “In my little black frying pan, I see the left shoes of person C, the ceiling, and Person D’s watch… Who am I thinking of?”

Then everyone will start guessing not knowing how the trick works. Person A and B of course will agree on the same person. Let’s say they are more than 3 or 4 people who know the trick, they will all somehow ‘think’ of the same person. I also don’t understand why everytime you have to say, “In my little black frying pan, I see…” I don’t know the reason or the meaning behind the black frying pan…

I have been trying to figure out how it works but I still can’t find it. They say it’s very simple and people just analyze it too much. It has something to do with maybe what they say or who they look at or some physical gesture. I have no idea.

I guess I could use some more hint on this puzzling game s
Any suggestions would be helpful… Thanks

I’ve known several variations on this game, but the most common one we called “black magic”. It’s probably identical to “little Black frying pan”.

Is that enough hints?

Well It would help if someone knows the trick to this game. I really would like to know how this game works. There is some kind of pattern I don’t know about and would like to find out. Does anyone knows this game of “My Little Black Frying Pan?”

Oh One more thing I might add is that they always give 3 hints everytime after they say, “In my little black frying pan, I see [thing 1], I see [thing 2], and I see [thing 3]. Who am I thinking of?”

I think I used to know the secret, but I’ve had too many blackouts to remember.

Unless your friends are total blackguards, they should let you in on it.

By the way, what’s the color of the objects they’re pointing at?

The point of the game is really to find out what the trick is. Apparently, it is very easy and one shouldn’t analyze things too much. My friends aren’t going to let me in the secret unless I can find it myself (it’s the point of the game).

But I’ve been involved in this game way too many times and I just can’t figure it out. It’s really upsetting. Only a few people know how the puzzle works. I know there is a patttern and not something they plot together as to ‘who they are thinking of’. There is a trick for sure…

I don’t know if the color might have something to do with it. But please, any suggestions might give me an idea on what to look for next time they play this game again.

OK, I realise my first response was utterly off the track (sorry) but here goes. I believe I’ve met this (in its “Black Magic” guise, forgotten it and detested it because I felt stupid, but, if colour of objects isn’t the trick, you could try thinking carefully about the way the players speak. I dimly remember something where it is to do with a phrase (eg black magic) either being used at all, or in a particular way. Is the “little black frying pan” phrase always at the beginning/middle/end of sentence, is there any difference in the words that precede or follow it, any change in the formula that could be sending messges to those in the know?

Hey don’t worry about your previous answers. I guess I should have been more clear with my question. People who are reading this should MAKE SURE to read ALL the previous postings. I gave a little more details on this “Little Black Frying Pan” game.

From what I can tell, they always start with, “In my little black frying pan, I see [object 1], I see [object 2], and I see [object 3]… Who am I thinking of?”

The objects they ‘see’ can be anything like the ceiling, somebody’s right earring, the brand name of someone’s shirt, the cap of a bottle on the table, a shoe, etc…

They are always 3 hints ending with “who am I thinking of?” The person can even repeat the 3 objects or things they 'see 'a second or third time and NOT think about the same person twice. It’s crazy!

Let’s say they are Person A, B, C, D, and E. Person A is the one who knows the trick. He will say, “In my little black frying pan, I see Person D’s glasses, I see the remote control on the table, and I see the button on Person B’s shirt. Who am I thinking of” People will start guessing. Then Person A will say, “I was thinking of Person C of course. It was quite obvious. Let me do it again” Person A will repeat the same object he just mentioned in the same order and people will say, “yeah you’re thinking of Person C of course” But Person A will say “No, I was thinkig of Person D”

This of course will drive everyone who doesn’t know the trick crazy because nobody gets how it works. Yet it is the point of this game to find out the trick. People who have found out the trick say it is so stupid and simple, but for most of them, it took them a long while to figure it out on their own. I want to make sure that there IS a PATTERN or TRICK and they’re not just trying to fool us. I guess I’m just trying to cheat right now but I gotta find out how this game works!!!

Horrible! So in order to get to the (extremely tedious, I’ll bet) point of this, you simply have to play it several more time, it seems. Any visual clues? eg. someone who folds or unfolds his/her arms, changes position of feet, strokes beard, adjusts glasses, tugs ear, adjusts hair…? And you say these people are your friends? Hmm.

I meant to say there IS a pattern or a trick. I don’t think it’s just a scam that my friend put together to drive others crazy with this stupid game

So if anyone knows about this game, please tell me or give me a suggestion on how to find out the trick behind it. Thanks people!

Yes, basically you have to play this game several several times in order to figure it out. I have been in this game many times and I still can’t figure it out. I have tried to make sense of it but I was told I analyzed it too much. It’s “simple and easy” like they say. Yeah right!

There is another game just like this one that involves a stick (pen, umbrella) or broom and it goes like, “This is not how you do it… this is how you do it” by hitting the stick or broom on the floor in any kind of (shape) pattern. Then the person who knows the trick will hand the stick to someone who doesn’t know and ask that person to repeat what he did. Most people will think that you have to hit the stick in the pattern that the person has done it but it has nothing to do with the way or the direction that the stick is hit. The shape or pattern will change from person to person (who know the trick of course). The person actually coughs in between “This is not how you do it” [cough slightly] and “THIS IS how you do it” It took me several tries before I could figure that one out but it was quite easy.

This little black frying pan game is supposedly as simple as that but I don’t see it! Argghhhhhhhhhh

I had a nice big reply for you yesterday, but when I tabbed down to “Submit Reply”, I accidentally hit “Clear Fields”. I then turned off the computer.

I have one question for you. Do they by chance say “Okay” before everything? We used to play the spoon game this way (no coughing). It became lots of fun when there was only one person left. It would go something like this:

Me: (tapping spoons together) “Okay, I can play the spoon game, can you play the spoon game?”

Him: (tapping spoons together) “I can play the spoon game can you play the spoon game?”

Me: No, you can’t play the spoon game. Watch carefully. (tapping spoons together) “OKAY. Okay?”

Him: Okay.

Me: (tapping spoons together) “Okay, I can play the spoon game, can you play the spoon game?”

Him: (tapping spoons together) “I can play the spoon game can you play the spoon game?”

Me: Nope. Watch again. (tapping spoons together) “OKAY! Okay, okay, okay, okay. Okay? Okay, I can play the spoon game, can you play the spoon game?”

hilarity ensues

I’m not sure if this applies to your case, but… I used to play a game called The Big Stick Game.

All the players would stand roughly in a circle. The leader (holder of the big stick) would choose someone to turn away from the circle. The leader would then recite an inane rhyme while pointing the stick at various people along with the words to the rhyme. At the last word of the rhyme, the stick would be pointing to one of the players. The leader would ask the turned-around player who the stick was pointing to.

The answer turned out to be whoever spoke last before the leader began reciting the rhyme. The motions the leader went through with the stick were merely a distraction. Of course, the people who knew the secret thought it raucously hilarious that no one could figure the answer out.

Perhaps the three objects in the frying pan have no relation to the person being thought of. Look and listen for some identifying event like this that selects the person being thought of.

Hope this helps…

Hotaruna, I think that might be it. We used to play a similar game called “Bang, bang” (yes, very exciting title). You would make a gun with your fingers, point at someone, anyone, say “Bang”, point at someone else “Bang”, point at someone else “Riccochet”, point, “Bang”. Or any combination. They say, “Who’s dead?”. First person to speak is dead.

Good luck, hoggie90. I think that’s the one you’re looking for.

Oh, I have a bunch of these. Off the top of my head:

“My aunt Emma, she died last night. She died, she died, she died last night. She died. Did she die?”

Black Magic:
“Ok, I’m thinking of something in this room. What am I thinking of?”
“The couch?” “no”
“The coffee cup?” “no”
“The NeXT Computer?” “no”
“The magazine?” “yes”

The bang bang game: initiator “shoots” a bunch of people with his hand held like a gun, saying “bang, bang, bang”. The others then have to figure out who really got shot.

Johnny Johnny Johnny Johnny Whoops Johnny Whoops Johnny Johnny Johhny Johnny, which is visual, so I won’t go into it.

I have a hunch about little black frying pan, but I’d have to see it a few times to test it out.

Mostly, these are games where when you “get it”, you don’t say what “it” is…you just start going along with it. You test your theory a few times, and when you’re confident you have it figured out, you start tormenting those who haven’t gotten it.

The maddening part is that some of these are designed so they can actually contradict themselves. In bang bang, for example, the person who got shot doesn’t even have to be one of the people you pointed at and said “bang” to.

I guess I should not have mentioned about the stick game… I know how the stick or spoon or whatever game works… I don’t know how the “BLACK FRYING PAN GAME” works!!! SOMEBODY TELL ME HOW THAT GAME WORKS. Please read my previous postings about the frying pan game… I need to find somebody who knows THAT game (and NOT the stick game).
MY LITTLE BLACK FRYING PAN!!!

whoops (:folds arms:)

After reading your later posts, it appears that your little black frying pan looks nothing like the ones I’ve seen. All of the variations I’ve seen involved color, but would yield the same answer for the same series of objects.

Since you’ve said that the same series yields different answers, it cannot possibly be anything about the objects (if this is correct). I’d go with the suggestions and look for last/first person who spoke, cues like finger pointing, leg crossing, foot placement, etc.

Just a guess, but if they can say the same clues, in the same order, and be refering to a different person, then clearly it has to be more than what they are saying. That means it must include either guestures or timing. It might be something like who they spoke to last, or who they are looking at when they say a certain part of the initial part of the question, or something like who their right or left hand or foot is pointing at when they are saying a part of the clue that refers to a right or left article of clothing. For instance, they point their left foot at someone, and then say “In my little black frying pan I see Bobbie’s left sock, Suzy’s purple underwear, and the ceiling.” The clues are therefore left and footwear, which dirrects you to the person pointed at by the speaker’s left foot. They could throw in other info by making it the second clue, which means it’s the second person in the line of the foot, or if it’s the second clue it reverses the direction, etc. Without being there to see, I don’t think we can help much other than to give you clues as to what to look for. watch from a distance if you can, and listen to see if there are patterns. If the clues always include a direction and an article of clothing, then you need to focus there. If they always have one person’s name, then it might be that person’s hand, foot or head (eyes).

Don’t get upset! My parent’s and their fraternity/sorority friends drove me insane with a game where they used to chant while using a stick to make a pattern on the ground. You tried to duplicate their little chant and pattern, and would always be told wrong. I got worked up, was convinced I was right and they were just being bastards, and finnaly sat down and just watched. After a while watching, I realized that to get it right you had to cough first, and then do the chant and any pattern you wanted.
