The film Big is a light-hearted comedy. However, the original script was very dark. After his wish is granted, Josh finds that he cannot obtain a job or housing because his social security numbe and other information belong to a thirteen year old. He is accused of identity theft and barely escapes the cops. Hungry and penniless, Josh ends up working as prostitute. His innocence makes him easy prey to all kinds con men and users. Josh eventually finds the Zoltar machine. In tears he unwishes his first wish saying “I don’t want to be big anymore. Make me small.”. The machine drops a card saying that his wish is granted. Josh smiles. Then a look of horror comes over his face. He looks down the front of his pants and screams. He begins yelling at the Zoltar machine and shouting that that wasn’t what he meant by small. Josh accidentally tilts the machine. The fall shatters it beyond hope of repair. Seeing his only chance at returning to his old life ruined. Josh takes a piece of broken glass from the Zoltar debris and slashes his wrist. “I wish I were dead.” He collapses onto the ground next to a card reading “Your wish is granted.”
