Although I anticipate this thread will sink faster than the Titanic, I was wondering if anyone has any advice on the best poker room in Las Vegas. I know Sam Stone is a player, and I assume there are others out there as well. I’m wondering where I should play in Las Vegas when I get there in a couple months.
I’m not looking necessarily for the prettiest, or the best managed poker room. I looking for a poker room I can make the most money in. I’ve been to the Mirage, which was fine, and Bellagio, which is gorgeous. Both were O.K., but it seemed there were a bit too many locals playing really tight and well.
So, if anyone wants to pipe up, I’d love to know your impressions of poker rooms in Vegas. Thanks.
Well, there used to be this place called the Horseshoe, but the Feds came and shut it down a coupla weeks ago. Seems Becky wasn’t making her contributions to the unions’ pension and health insurance funds. Used to be an international poker hot spot, had the World Series and all that, but, alas, it is no more.
Actually, anywhere you go in Vegas is going to be stocked with savvy locals. The Mirage and Bellagio would probably have the lowest percentage of local players in town.
Well, let’s see, who has poker rooms…
Union Plaza, which may be the second seediest joint downtown still has a poker room, as does the Orleans. I think the El Commode, er I mean, Cortez still has one-but again, these are all frequented primarily by locals.
A lot of places in town have closed down their poker rooms because some accountant didn’t feel they were profitable enough.
Honestly, if you’re not a lethal weapon as a poker player, I’d avoid Vegas. The locals will take your money, chew you up and spit you out.
Actually, I’d avoid Vegas period. If I had enough money for the moving expenses, I would leave this town so fast you’d hear a Doppler shift.
What limits are we talking about? If you want to play above 4-8, your only real choices are the Mirage and the Bellagio. I used to like the Luxor for 4-8 but I haven’t been in a couple of years.
I’ve only played at The Mirage and at Mandalay Bay. I liked the second better because its right off the sports book and they have plenty of TVs to watch the game. Also, I won money on a 3/6 half-kill table there.
Not to drag the thread too far off-topic, but has there been any indication that either the Horseshoe will be open under the same or new management in time for this year’s World Series, or that the WS will move to another casino?
I played 2-6 at Excalibur a couple of times. It was a pretty tight table, but that may have been because I played during the day, when there were more old retired guys than tourists. I’ve heard evenings get more tourists and hence are looser. Excalibur’s poker room is small and unassuming, and they have a few bonuses which are nice: if you lose with pocket aces or hold aces full or better, you get to spin a wheel for $30-$300. There’s also a jackpot of a few grand which the table splits if you lose with aces full or better.
Well, there has been much noise that Harrah’s may be buying the 'Shoe, and the Bellagio has been threating a rival poker tournament for a couple of years. If Harrah’s doesn’t keep the WSOP going, it might end up being held at Bellagio.
